From start to finish Crombie presents an intriguing tale of a bombing in a train station with seamless transition between storyline, police procedures, characters and overall flow. Utilizing the talents of her traditional crime solvers, Duncan Kincaid, Gemma James Kincaid, Doug Cullen and Melody Talbot a train station bombing is solved. The story had well thought out premises, and solutions with suspense, nearly non-stop action. and a very good read. That being said, was unsure of her injecting prejudice, and racism into the story via Jasmine Sidana a DI that reported to Duncan Kincaid.
Lastly not enough kudos have been given Crombie for the pictorial maps in her books, which involve the reader and enhance the storyline, giving depth and meaning to location, location, location. From start to finish Crombie presents an intriguing tale of a bombing in a train station with seamless transition between storyline, police procedures, characters and overall flow. An Ian Rankin mantra atypical story line, where the focus is on the antagonist, an assassin who is a hemophiliac, that is cast to he reader in a somewhat protagonist light. Rankin mixes the assassin's goal of retribution against those who he feels has set-him-up for capture. Supposedly this is a cult who used him to terminate a female reporter who reportedly is an adversary of the cult. The tale weaves into a pursuit and involvement of the assassin by a New York PI, CIA, US and government NSC. Also the storyline has questionable support characters for the assassin whose overall skills and just-in -the-nick-of-time rescues assist in his precarious situations. Finally the tale stretches it's imagination to a questionable and highly dramatic surprise ending. An Ian Rankin mantra atypical story line, where the focus is on the antagonist, an assassin who is a hemophiliac, that is cast to he reader in a somewhat protagonist light. Tana French is an excellent and creative story teller. Although the storyline involves resolving a crime in a girls boarding school; where typically the higher end of the socio- economic stratification participate, was entertainingly unique. comments were difficult to write due to some of the following: 1) The attempt by French, through her characters to present and engage in some of the complexities of societal issues such as; a) privileges of those deemed in that societal ranking, b) bullying, c) clicks, d) peer pressure, e)belonging, f) self-esteem, g) love, h) success, i) issues, ideologies and biases of boarding schools, j) entitlement, k) teenagers adjustment from adolescent to adulthood, l) dysfunctional families
2) Character development was too long and overdone, as well as the unending police interrogation procedures.
3) The ending appeared psychologically driven with questionable assumptions, and improbable speculations between antagonist and protagonist.
4) Appeared to be written more for and toward teenage girls and their fantasiesTana French is an excellent and creative story teller. The Burning Room is well written, routine, and a mildly suspenseful crime. Hieronymus Bosch and his new partner-in-training Lucia Soto solve two Cold Case crimes using effective police procedures, experience and expertise of Bosch. The aforemen- tioned talents of Bosch are shared and passed on to an eager, tech savvy Soto whose motivation to succeed are fueled and sculpted by her desire to bring justice for friends who perished and herself a survivor of an arsonist fire. Though the ending is melodramatic, a good read. The Burning Room is well written, routine, and a mildly suspenseful crime. McGilloway uses recovery of dead bodies of the disappeared, 'cillin', Goldenhar Syndrome in constructing a complex murder/crime story. Also, using Inspector Benedict Devlin of the Garda to effect resolution.
However in my opinion as much as there is the intriguing murder/crime storyline; McGilloway chooses to expose the many difficulties that are the result of political strife and conflict resulting from the battles within Northern Ireland. Although interwoven within the storyline among the key items McGilloway cites are the ; casualties of the war, IRA, Catholic Church, political border lines, jurisdictional red tape within the border counties as affecting the country coming together as one.
Overall a good read which could have been made better if there were explanation of the many acronyms used.McGilloway uses recovery of dead bodies of the disappeared, 'cillin', Goldenhar Syndrome in constructing a complex murder/crime story. Rankin creatively brings together his 'big three' crime solving protagonist; John Rebus, Siobban Clarke, and Malcolm Fox interactively in a multifaceted storyline of two separate crimes that have interrelated characters.
Also, though not related to these crimes, Rankin includes acknowledge-ment of a current factual political topic; the UK and Scotland together or separated.
Whereas several crimes; past and present are uncovered and solved Rankin utilizes the 'big three's'; knowledge of police procedures, experience and knowledge individually and collectively making for excellent crime solving that is; probable, thought provoking, rational and a good read.Rankin creatively brings together his 'big three' crime solving protagonist; John Rebus, Siobban Clarke, and Malcolm Fox interactively in a multifaceted storyline of two separate crimes that have interrelated characters.

An excellent rating is given to Lisa Black's 'Blunt Impact' due to her being a creative and unique story teller. In particular the manner in which she maintains continuity, flow and interweaving three separate storylines and does it seamlessly. Although some loos ends were left untied and a frenzied paced, physically questionable ending it was a good read. Also, let me add, I do not approve or condone any author's who over use children or teens characters to launch a storyline in spite of a somewhat flawed premise, logic of circumstances, diatribes of the youth character, and it's lack of rationale to the reader. An excellent rating is given to Lisa Black's 'Blunt Impact' due to her being a creative and unique story teller. Self disclaimer: not a fan of authors who use children and teens as the; premise, hero, heroine or placing them in an adult protagonist role as a crime solver, unless it's Nancy Drew, Andy Hardy, etc. That being said Koryta's tale does a good job in giving an overview of the basics for; camping, hiking, outdoor environ- ment techniques, etc. It is against this backdrop killers pursue a youth who witnessed their killing. Besides the aforementioned, the story is filled with unnecessarily invented frenzied situation which prolong a boring and predictable ending.Self disclaimer: not a fan of authors who use children and teens as the; premise, hero, heroine or placing them in an adult protagonist role as a crime solver, unless it's Nancy Drew, Andy Hardy, etc. That being said Koryta's tale does a good job in…

Ina Rankin's protagonist crime solver, John Rebus, behaves in typical fashion of being self-centered, a loner, not a team player, ignores policy, procedures, and department rules, rebellion against leadership, excessive smoking and drinking, etc., all in pursuit of a serial killer. The Rebus character's mantra is perseverance in pursuit of a principle, no matter the cost, is understandable, justifiable. and acceptable. While there are elements of intellect, and expert crime solving techniques and abilities shown by Rebus for most of this story, Rankin lets the story and reader persevere into boredom. Through Rebus's egocentric, obsession filled, delusional, unbelievable , and unrealistic assumptions and pursuit of the antagonist, he brings resolution and much welcomed closure to this tale.Ina Rankin's protagonist crime solver, John Rebus, behaves in typical fashion of being self-centered, a loner, not a team player, ignores policy, procedures, and department rules, rebellion against leadership, excessive smoking and drinking, etc.,…

Giuttari's multi-faceted storyline, if somewhat representative of Florence, surrounding areas, Tuscany region, and Rome Italy's law enforcement system, provides insight into, the; policies, procedures, protocol, political and legal hierarchy, pecking order, rituals, influence of the 'old guard', secret organization's and lodge affiliations input, and appear to affect the manner in which crimes are approached and solved. More is not always better, and in an attempt to develop a unique and stunning storyline, the closure became more difficult. Thus, the end becomes a frenzied set of circumstances and situations more fit for a Marvel comic book villain and hero encounter. This was my first exposure to Michele Giuttari, and though disappointed with the ending, I do appreciate the overview of the complexity of the law enforcement in that country. Also, I plan to read at least one more of his writings.Giuttari's multi-faceted storyline, if somewhat representative of Florence, surrounding areas, Tuscany region, and Rome Italy's law enforcement system, provides insight into, the; policies, procedures, protocol, political and legal hierarchy,…

Russel McLean's Scottish private investigator, A J. McNee has been liken to and fit the mold of several of those tough-guy PI types we've come to accept and acknowledge as fighting for justice and the under represented, no matter the cost. This protagonist while operating within the law, yet has ties and associations on the fringe of those he typically pursuits to incarcerate. In this briefly but well written tale McNee solves a complex case involving child abuse and murder while transitioning in time periods and associating with criminals whom he despises and seeks to bring to justice.Russel McLean's Scottish private investigator, A J. Disappointed in the premise of book. Having supernatural powers is one thing, but the ability to have individuals control others via being hooked-up to a source was a stretch.
