Rumiko Takahashi’s A Mermaid Saga was not her best work and I was really disappointed reading this manga by her considering I really enjoy her work. To be frankly honest, I never made it past the second volume of this series. Even through the mere two volumes I read of this series, I wanted to jab myself in my eye sockets while I was reading. The basic plot is about two lovers named Yuta and Mana who are immortal. In the story, legend has it that if a human were to eat the flesh of a mermaid they would become immortal. However the flesh of a mermaid affects each person differently. Throughout their journey to find a cure for the immortality they gained, Yuta and Mana come across many others that consumed the mermaid flesh but were not as lucky as they were, and were now paying the price. This manga sounds better than it is. Rumiko Takahashi is the genius behind Ranma ½ and of course the ever so famous and successful InuYasha series. However, The Mermaid Saga despite how great it sounds really is most definitely not what I hoped for. I found myself very confused and scratching my noggin a lot of the time, unable to follow what was going on. I also found many parts to be very annoying and boring. The artwork as well is very dated and very ‘old’ looking. I wouldn’t recommend anybody to read this manga as it was not good at all. Simply terrible. I would rate this manga a 4/10 Sorry, Takahashi.Rumiko Takahashi’s A Mermaid Saga was not her best work and I was really disappointed reading this manga by her considering I really enjoy her work. The film Warm Bodies was directed by Jonathan Levine and is one of the cutest films I’ve seen in a long time. It takes place in a post- apocalyptic city that separates the living from the undead with a ginormous wall, cutting the city in half. The film is a romance about a zombie named ‘R’ whom of which can’t remember much about his life before he became a zombie. In the film he comes across a girl by the name of Julie, while saving her from a pack of hungry zombies. It is with Julie that ‘R’ starts to feel more and more human and soon enough they fall in deep love. This film in my opinion was very sweet and cute. It is not very serious, yet at the same time not silly, this film has the perfect balance between the two making Warm Bodies on of my favourite films. Both Nicholas Hault who plays ‘R’ and Teresa Palmer who plays Julie do a great job in this film and their chemistry is off the charts in Warm Bodies. The main themes that play out well in the film are Love and Friendship. I would recommend this film to anybody! It is sweet and cute and will leave you saying “Awww!” after every scene. This movie has a great message of the power of love and friendship behind it that I think we could all learn from. It seems to be more of a girly mushy film; however, it does have violence and gory scenes to help satisfy those with a thirst for more action. I really enjoyed Warm Bodies; I would rate it a 10/10!The film Warm Bodies was directed by Jonathan Levine and is one of the cutest films I’ve seen in a long time. Hello anime loving ladies and gentlemen! Now today I’ll be reviewing a fairly popular romantic comedy/ reverse harem manga, Ouran High School Host Club! Written by Bisco Hatori, this is one of my favourite genres when it comes to manga or anime. Ouran High School Host Club revolves around a poor tomboyish girl by the name of Haruhi, who gets a full scholarship to attend a school for some of Japan’s wealthiest and elite students. Once there she accidently stumbles upon the school’s Host Club run by a few handsome students attending the elite school. While making the attempt to try and leave the room she accidently ends up shattering a very expensive vase owned by the Host Club therefore making herself in debt to the Host Club and is forced to join in order to repay the club for her accident. Ouran High School Host Club is a very funny manga. This story contains most if not all of the anime archetypes and it is because of that, that the manga is hilarious. Each character has their own backstory and own personality that will make you fall in love with them. Some themes in this manga include Love and Friendship. The artwork of Ouran High School Host Club is very well done and cute. I would recommend this manga to anybody. It is a great story to be read when you’re having a rough day and need some cheering up! I would rate Ouran High School Host Club a 10/10!Hello anime loving ladies and gentlemen! The guinea Pig Diaries is a hilarious read! In this book Jacobs goes through a series of thought provoking experiments and records the results of these experiments. Some of his experiments include hiring a team of people in India to manage his entire life, he spends a month being radically honest, goes to the Academy Awards disguised as a movie star that he closely resembles, listening to everything his wife tell him to do for a month, and many other crazy social experiments. What I really enjoyed about A.J Jacobs’ The Guinea Pig Diaries was how funny and sweet his writing was. There is also something very real about the way he writes that you feel that you truly and personally know him and are experiencing what he is throughout all of his experiments he does, by the end of this book I felt that I was one of Jacobs close friends. I was told to read this book for one of my English assignments and I absolutely fell in love. A.J Jacobs is the King of Quirk, and he will keep you laughing throughout every chapter you read of the Guinea Pig Diaries. This non- fiction is a good and refreshing break from your typical novel or short story. It is 100% entertaining from the beginning ‘til end and is definitely a cute and quirky book everybody should read. I promise you, that you will not be disappointed. If I were to rate this book I would give it a 10/10! Great Job Jacobs I’m looking forward to reading more of your work! The guinea Pig Diaries is a hilarious read! Hello anime loving ladies and gentlemen! If you love psychological drama and romance, Setona Mizurshiro’s After School Nightmare is the manga for you! The manga is about a young teenage boy by the name of Mashiro Ichijo. He is your idealistic male manga character, very handsome and kind hearted, however he hides a dark secret about himself. He is not fully a man, his upper body is of a male, but his lower body is female. In the manga he finds himself in trouble when a school nurse leads him to an isolated class and tells him that in order to graduate he has to go in an alternate dream world and find a mysterious key, competing with other students to find it. Throughout the manga we see the main character, Mashiro struggle with gender identity. He meets two classmates, one male and one female and is attracted to both and they form a love triangle together. This manga in my opinion is nothing less than unique. The plot is filled with many twists and turns and will keep intrigued in its web the whole time you are reading it. After school nightmare does however have some explicit scenes that may be very disturbing to some readers and should be read by anyone under the age of 14 or by anyone who is easily disturbed. Some themes in this manga include Love, Sexual identity, Dreams and Friendship. Each character is well developed in the story and makes you truly feel close to them in their struggle. The artwork for this manga is amazing as well. I would rate After School Nightmare an 8/10, check it out for yourself!Hello anime loving ladies and gentlemen! The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald is a timeless and classic novel that I really enjoyed. The Great Gatsby is a story about a mysterious man by the name of Jay Gatsby and his love for greatness and an already married woman by the name of Daisy Buchannan. Through the eyes of a man named Nick Carraway; Daisy’s cousin and Gatsby’s neighbor we see the rise and the tragic fall of Gatsby, a man who dreamt big and passionately. Throughout the novel we see a deadly love triangle form between Gatsby, Daisy and her very rich husband Tom Buchanan, while Nick and others see witness the disasters that come from this triangle. F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby is a novel that despite taking place in the 1920’s is still a relevant novel today. Some of the main themes of The Great Gatsby include Love and Deceit. The Characters throughout this novel go through a lot of development. I found myself loving than hating some characters in this book and other characters I felt a great attachment to.The Great Gatsby is novel that starts off really slow, it may seem dull and boring to some, but if you keep reading you’ll be hooked to this unique story line. Fitzgerald’s writing itself is very unique, the book is very well written. You will learn a few new words after finishing this novel. F. Together, both Inuyasha and Kagome embark on a journey to find the shards of the sacred Shikon jewel which Kagome accidentally shattered. Along the way they make many new friends and not to mention many enemies. Many characters develop romantic interests As well. This anime in my opinion is superb! especially if you enjoy phenomenal characters and a detailed plot line. Inuyasha is my absolute, number one, favourite anime of all time. In my opinion, nothing can top this anime! However, because the anime is a little old the artwork may seem a little dated but the story quality of Inuyasha is timeless. Every single detail that you read or watch in Inuyasha has a significant purpose, which makes this anime very intriguing. Hello manga loving ladies and gentlemen! If you enjoy romance manga/ anime as much as I do than this is definitely the series for you! Natsuki Takaya's Fruits Basket is an extremely heartfelt and romantic manga/anime. The story is about a young teenage Japanese girl named Tohru Honda, after losing both parents do to some tragedies, ends up living in a tent in the woods, until her grandfather's house is done renovation. However she soon comes to the realization that her campsite is on the land owned by the Sohma's. It is then that she meets Yuki Sohma; the prince of her High school and his novelist older cousin, Shigure. When they see Tohru's living conditions they offer her to lodge in an empty bedroom of their house as a housekeeper. As the story unfolds we find out that the Sohma's are keeping a dark secret, whenever they are under a deal of stress or are hugged by a member of the opposite sex they turn in one of the 12 animals of the Chinese Zodiac. It soon becomes Tohru's ambition to find a way to break the Sohma family curse. This manga/ anime is very mainstream, anybody who reads manga or watches anime would have at least heard about Fruits Basket. I would say that this romantic comedy/ reverse harem is targeted toward its female audience more than its male. Natsuki Takaya does a great job giving each character their own back story and bringing each character to life. The themes of love, friendship and acceptance of oneself play out really well in this manga/ anime. You will get so attached to the characters that you will cry your eyes outs when they cry or you will laugh your head off when they crack a joke. The overall plot of the manga/anime is very unique, I've never read or seen anything even similar to this before. If you are looking for originality, Fruits Basket is the Manga/ anime for you. Becca Fitzpatricks, Hush, Hush is a novel that was highly recommended by a friend of mine, however after I read it, I was thoroughly bored and disappointed. Hush, Hush is about a young teenage girl named Nora who meets this mysterious boy at school by the name of Patch. She is both repelled yet allured by this mysterious boy. Patch saves Nora multiple times from certain death throughout the novel, though Nora feels that Patch may be stalking her. She eventually beings to get feelings for Patch as it is revealed that he is a fallen angel protecting her. Both Patch and Nora get caught up in a fight to the death with some people from school who similarly to Patch aren't exactly who they seem to be. This novel in my opinion was horrifically written and was very boring. The plot itself appeared to have a lot of potential, but Fitzpatrick's novel failed to deliver. As I was reading it I found myself constantly comparing it to the famous Twilight novel by Stephanie Meyer. The book built up suspense, however most of the action takes place near the end and it doesn't deliver as much as the reader would have hoped. The characters in my opinion are the best part, they all develop really well in their own unique ways and make you feel that you know them. Themes in the novel include love, friendship and betrayal. These themes are portrayed well by Fitzpatrick in her novel. The plot however was terribly written and executed. When you read this novel you will find yourself comparing it to Twilight, as some parts in this novel are almost identical to Stephanie Meyers Twilight. However if you are into romantic fantasy like Twilight then you will love Hush, Hush. If you don't, then don't even bother picking up this book, even if your good friend recommends it. I give this book a 6/10, not worth the read.Becca Fitzpatricks, Hush, Hush is a novel that was highly recommended by a friend of mine, however after I read it, I was thoroughly bored and disappointed. Cynthia Hand's Unearthly is a teen romance/ fantasy novel about angels. Though the concept of angels seems a little over done, this novel proves to be worth the read. In the story we are introduced to Clara Gardner, whom of which is part angel. Clara, because of being part angel now has a purpose in life, something shes was destined to accomplish. Throughout the novel Clara has visions of what her purpose as an angel on earth is. These visions eventually lead her to a boy named Christian in her new school. Clara soon enough finds herself in a hot spot as another boy named Tucker comes into the picture. In the novel Clara struggles between the concept of love and fate and finds herself in many conflicts throughout the story. I fairly enjoyed this book. I liked seeing the love triangle between Clara, Tucker, and Christian. However, I found that this book wasn't anything special, the story itself, in my opinion doesn't seem very memorable, and I found some parts a little dull. The character development of the main character; Clara was done really well. It was interesting reading her internal conflicts about choosing either Christian or Tucker. Some themes that play out in the novel are Love and Fate. Cynthia Hand's Unearthly is an appealing book for those who love twilight-esque novels or anybody looking for a decent teen romance novel. Though it is a little lengthy, this novel is a fair read. I would rate this book a 7.5/10.Cynthia Hand's Unearthly is a teen romance/ fantasy novel about angels. "People shouldn't be afraid of their government. Government should be afraid of their people." - V for Vendetta. James Mcteigue's V for Vendetta should not be called anything less than a masterpiece. Starring Hugo Weaving as the anonymous vendetta character "V" and Natalie Portman as his ally "Evey", V for Vendetta is one of the most inspirational films I've seen in a long time. The story takes place in a futuristic dystopian and fascist society in England. As the people of England seem somewhat accepting of the dictatorship in their country, they stay quiet out of fear. One man however; V decides to take it upon himself to rid England of this oppressive society and vows to give the people of England their freedoms back, by using terrorist tactics to do so. He then meets his soon to be ally and lover; Evey Hammond, whom he saves from governmental secret police. I have no other words for this film other than WOW. That was my initial reaction to when I viewed this film for the first time. This film is absolutely brilliant. James Mcteigue who also assisted in directing the matrix trilogy does a phenomenal job directing V for Vendetta. He does a great job in reminding us that as a society we can do anything and if we band together as a community and if we put our minds into fighting for something there is nothing we can't accomplish. "A building is a symbol, as is the act of destroying it. Symbols are given power by people. Alone a symbol is meaningless, but with enough people, blowing up a building can change the world." - V for Vendetta, (V talking about blowing up parliament). The main character, V is seen throughout the movie wearing a Guy Fawkes mask which gives you an idea of the inspiration behind his character. The movie itself is loosely based off of the historical events of Guy Fawkes, except in the film Guy Fawkes is a symbol of freedom and positivity as opposed to negativity and treason. Both Hugo Weaving and Natalie Portman do a phenomenal job acting in this film. Many characters in this film go through some sort of character development. Themes of Oppression, Freedom, fascism...etc play major roles in the film and James Mcteigue incorporates them in a very unique way. This movie is one of my absolute favourite movies of all time, I would rate it an 11/10 - an Absolute Must Watch."People shouldn't be afraid of their government. Hello manga loving ladies and gentlemen! If you are a fan of the Reverse Harem, Romance genres of manga then you will most definitely love what Hana-Kimi has to offer. Written and illustrated by Hisaya Nakajo, Hana- Kimi is about a Japanese- American teenage girl named Mizuki Ashiya whom disguises herself as a teenage boy to attend an ALL BOYS boarding school in Japan in order to get to know her idol; Sano Izumi, a well known high jumper. But things get heated when Mizuki realizes that she is not only Sano's classmate but she is also Sano's Roommate. As the story further unfolds, Mizuki catches some unwanted attention of another boy in school and soon enough her real identity starts to creep out. This manga in my opinion is very unique in the sense that it deals with themes such as, discovering one's sexuality and love itself. Each character goes through their own bit of development which I think is relatable to teenagers today as they transition into adulthood. Hana- Kimi's plot is very similar to the movie 'She's the Man' with Amanda Bynes, but with it's own Japanese twist! The comedy will have you bursting into laughter and the romance will have you sighing and awing like no tomorrow! Every character is lovable in their own way and will have you feeling as if you are a part of their group. I really enjoyed this manga, it is most definitely worth the read if you love romance manga's. I would rate this an 8/10.Hello manga loving ladies and gentlemen! "We accept the reality of the world with which we are presented." -The Truman Show.
The Truman Show, directed by Peter Weir s a timeless and brilliant movie. Despite being an older film, The Truman Show is very unique, and many of the themes and concepts such as confinement and reality are still very much relevant today.
A moving story about a boy who was adopted and raised by a Hollywood film industry. Truman Burbank's entire life; from an unborn fetus to a grown man is Broadcast live around the world 24/7 and is viewed by a worldwide audience. Truman; unaware of his life being completely artificial, his friends and family all played by payed actors and his hometown being a enormous television set, soon realizes the truth. As the movie goes on Truman Burbank becomes more and more determined to liberate himself from his confinement and explore the world beyond his own.
I overall really enjoyed this film! The uniqueness of the plot in it's entirety is remarkably refreshing. Jim Carey does an amazing job in playing a serious character role as opposed to his usual comedic character roles.
For those who have no previous knowledge of the movie plot may find it SLIGHTLY confusing at first, but as the movie unfolds, the viewer will be nothing less than dazzled by this film. This is one of my favourite movies of all time and I would definitely recommend anyone of any age to watch this! The collaboration between Peter Weir and Jim Carey is something that cannot be missed! I would rate this movie a 10/10 - A definite must watch."We accept the reality of the world with which we are presented." -The Truman Show.
