Someone had to do a biography eventually, I suppose. This first effort is rich in facts but disappointing in the author's failure to do any examination of what those facts might mean. A mediocre treatment of a great writer and conflicted man.

Hard to read because of its content, but incredibly powerful because of what you didn't know about North Korea. One of the best books I've found for describing daily life and its daily indignities in the Hermit Kingdom.

Escaping the inescapable North Korean prison camps is an incredible story, but this narrative suffers from a lack of pathos. I don't know if it's the writer who failed to convey the true horror or Shin Dong-hyuk who was unable or unwilling to provide the necessary details, but what should have been a nuclear bomb of a book fails to engage on the human level, which is what we need to understand such extraordinary depths of cruelty.Escaping the inescapable North Korean prison camps is an incredible story, but this narrative suffers from a lack of pathos. If you're a dystopia completist, this might be worth reading, but otherwise save your time. The world and the characters are flat and simply plod along without engaging the reader's interest. Meh.

It's hard to say that a story involving repressed sexuality, dysfunctional families, and a hard path to the self is a fun read, but if it's possible for these to be fun, they are in Fun Home. I love stories and I love being surprised. Every time I thought the story was veering off course, I was delighted to see how the author was actually building a complex and nuanced story. It's hard to say that a story involving repressed sexuality, dysfunctional families, and a hard path to the self is a fun read, but if it's possible for these to be fun, they are in Fun Home. Flat characters and an utterly predictable plot make this book a slog to read. The subject (the deadly influenza epidemic in the early 1900s) is interesting, but the treatment it gets here is not worth your time.

Wow. Just...wow. A tremendously tender and honest look at how the mind protects itself, even when we know we're wrong. I felt an intimacy with the narrator that I'm not sure she even felt herself. A delicate take on a brutal subject.

I know other people who loved the snarky voice of this character accidentally stranded on Mars, but it didn't resonate for me. I wanted either more depth to the character or a better sense of how he's using humor as a defense mechanism. The middle road of narration that was taken instead is, in my opinion, not terrible, but fairly bland.I know other people who loved the snarky voice of this character accidentally stranded on Mars, but it didn't resonate for me.
