A mere trifle. Like a meringue, it's pretty to look at, but made of sugar & egg whites, it crumbles into powder. The Grand Budapest Hotel has enough art direction for a dozen movies, right down to the typography - every single serif has been artisanally crafted 'just so.' And to what end? It's charming eye candy, but utterly bereft of content. Its budget would cover Eric Rohmer's lifetime of work; Max Ophuls could have made Le Plaisir for one of its scenes. Its cast - from Mathieu Amalric to Bill Murray - is wasted. It's the artsy hipster-bait equivalent of a Hollywood action picture, and while arts-y, it has nothing to do with art. So much money, talent, and possibility squandered. If you're the type who confuses 'gourmet cupcakes' with actual food, well, here's a movie for you. It's entertaining, I'll grant that, but in the end... kind of a shame.A mere trifle. Like a meringue, it's pretty to look at, but made of sugar & egg whites, it crumbles into powder. The editing style, the themes, the philosophical and political digressions... it's all here. The one Godard film you must see. I've thought about this one for years, and given his longevity and the overall strength of his catalogue, it's a tough call. Breathless was groundbreaking, Vivre sa vie and Band of Outsiders have considerable merit, but I don't think he really came into his mature phase until Masculin/Feminin. This goes further, and the color is lovely. The editing style, the themes, the philosophical and political digressions... it's all here. The one Godard film you must see. Time spent watching this is better spent elsewhere. It's like De Palma hired a 2nd year film student to make a De Palma film. Rapace and McAdams have acted well in other films; flat to comic book-like here. This is the sort of "erotic thriller" that HBO would air after midnight in the 1980s - and computers and cell phones aside, it looks like it. The only thing I was in suspense for was the words, "The End."Time spent watching this is better spent elsewhere. It's like De Palma hired a 2nd year film student to make a De Palma film. A YA 'book' for hipsters. This is what comes of a generation that learned to read and write on Myspace.

Any time spent reading this could be spent in innumerably better ways: cleaning your kitchen or bathroom, watching a few hours of tv, taking a walk. Why not write an e-mail you've been putting off for too long? I resent the fact that the time I spent with this book is time I will never get back. Superficial, narcissistic twaddle.Any time spent reading this could be spent in innumerably better ways: cleaning your kitchen or bathroom, watching a few hours of tv, taking a walk. Art and life: here the two overlap. Like all accounts of obsessive love, the interest is primarily in the eyes of the obsessor... to a point. I hit a point 1/3 of the way in or so when I just wanted to shake the protagonist: Snap out of it!! But that would obviate the premise of the book. After some admittedly slow going in the middle, toward the end it opens up and turns into something surprising, quite beautiful, and moving - as if Pamuk need those hundreds of pages of set-up. Closing the book, I was devastated. That's not too strong a word: for the next two days I didn't feel like reading anything else; the book had worked its magic. Now, only to go to Istanbul and see the actual Museum!Art and life: here the two overlap. Like all accounts of obsessive love, the interest is primarily in the eyes of the obsessor... to a point. Geoff Dyer summarizes the film, which, if you've seen it, isn't too necessary. Along the way he provides a few quotes from Tarkovsky and others on the film, but mainly rattles on in a smug and self-satisfied way; he gives a strong impression of someone who thinks of himself as quite a wit, and much fun to be around at parties. I'd toss him out on his ear. If you're interested in Tarkovsky, read Sculpting in Time. Or google "Tarkovsky." Or just watch the movie again. (Or Nostalghia, which he repeatedly trashes). The book's a failure: it fails to tell you much of anything new or original about the movie, and for a film he claims he can't get out of his head, he doesn't convey much enthusiasm for it. For Geoff Dyer fans only.Geoff Dyer summarizes the film, which, if you've seen it, isn't too necessary. A compelling narrative of contemporary urban life, boredom and routine. A touch of Bartleby the Scrivener infuses Marguerite Duras' The Square, rewritten by an heir of JG Ballard (and far more interesting than the latter). Strangely moving, as I found myself slowly drawn under the surface. If you found this "depressing and dumb," then turn your eyes inside and dig the vacuum.A compelling narrative of contemporary urban life, boredom and routine.
