A deftly imagined novel on the many identities we take on in our lives-- those we are born with and those we construct for ourselves. "Attending summer camp as a boy, Erik Schroder -- a first generation East German immigrant -- adopts the name of Eric Kennedy, a fateful white lie that will set him on an improbable and ultimately tragic course" -- Jacket flap.

Schroder is a narrator you love to hate. Or grow to love. Either way, he's misguided and yet has his heart in the right place.

About a guy who kidnaps his daughter. He is very sympathetic but you understand why he should not be responsible for a child.

Disturbing book about a man and his relationships with those around him. Not a book I would recommend.

Schroder re-invents himself at the age of fourteen and never looks back. He changes his name and manufacturers a new family and a new history. Life is good, until it isn't. Bewildered he continues on until he has dug himself into an inextricable hole. Lots to think about in this story - family, nature or nurture, communication - but possibly for Schroder the biggest question might be, is love all you really need. Really enjoyed the story and I found the writing to be fantastic.
