Based on a novel by Rudolfo Anaya, this film is as good as the book, which is to say -- excellent. Other reviewers have written about the story line; I just want to say that it is well worth watching (and reading).

This film of Hispanics living in 1940’s New Mexico portrays the conflicts between the traditional values (strict Catholic dogma, traditional medicine, and small farming) and the coming modern era of looser religion, modern medicine, and corporate farming. Three sons, returning from their world-wide experiences as soldiers in World War II, find it difficult to stay reigned in to their small village, and have desires to experience the wider New Mexican ways. Ultima, a curandera that practices traditional ways of medicine, knows enough of these practices to eliminate illnesses in the small village.

touching story of good and evil as life washes over an observant young boy.

This movie is based on the book Bless me, Ultima by Rudolfo Anaya, which reflects on the coming of age story of a 6 yr old boy (Antonio) and his struggles with family, friends, religion, and good vs evil. He overcomes all with the help of his family friend, Ultima which comes to live with his family. It is a wonderfully told story, and I am looking forward to watching this movie.

Based on the novel Bless Me, Ultima is a story about good versus evil. Seven year old Antonio and his grandmother Ultima work together to help cursed and sick people. In the meantime Antonio as well as his family and relatives have their own share of problems. Ultima teaches Antonio about the spiritual world all around them and how good can always overcome evil.
