Absolute delight, so funny, and it sparkles with originality 85 years after it was released. I had never heard of this, picked it off of the shelf because I enjoyed the Lubitsch movies that starred Chevalier & MacDonald - this is at least as good.

VERY GOOD 1932 b/w musical set in France. It was a pre-code film and the producers had a lot of back and forth with folks who wanted to suppress some of the 'naughty' aspects of the film. The extras did include a memo summary of what was discussed and what got took out. Quite a few double entendre jokes and, um, 'broad' humour did get left in.
Overall, the film was a quite romantic and enjoyable period piece - and some of the 1932 film making techniques were excellent given how camera technology was beginning to evolve, etc.
I did particularly enjoy seeing Myrna Loy - and also the three spinsters who have brief cameos throughout the film.

A gem of a film and a must for anyone who's a fan of classic movie musicals. This naughty double entendre laden film is innovative in it's camera angles and theatrical lighting. The director, Rouben Mamoulian, was a Russian theater director who helmed the original production of 'Porgy and Bess'. He was given carte blanche and told to 'do whatever you want' and his experience is evident in every frame. The score by Rogers and Hart isn't typical musical comedy fare. The songs are interwoven into the script and are often spoken and end with no big finish. The stars, Chevalier and Jeanette MacDonald shine as well as Myrna Loy in a secondary role as the boy crazy ingenue. A completely mad and jolly romp, enjoy!
