Baker & Taylor Hoping that her struggles as a recently divorced mom will soon be over, Kate Austen is hired by a new friend to produce some artwork, but the job is cut short suddenly in light of the friend's suspicious suicide
Blackwell North Amer Do you ever really know who your friends are? Bonded by divorce, Mona Sterling and Kate have become fast friends. But while Mona has hit the divorce settlement jackpot, Kate has to support herself and her five-year-old daughter with her burgeoning new career as an art consultant. Still, her scattershot life in the upscale California suburbs shows promise: Her divorce is in its final stages, handsome homicide detective Michael Stone is hinting about commitment, and Mona has called upon Kate to spruce up her newly bare walls with artwork. But the scheme is short-circuited when Kate arrives at Mona's house to find her friend stone-cold dead in the den. A bottle of expensive scotch and an empty vial of sleeping pills convince police that it's an open-and-shut case of suicide. But Kate isn't buying. For one thing, Mona had just rescheduled a tennis date. For another, she only drank gin. A troubled teenager and her surly biker boyfriend, a faithless husband and his suspicious wife, and a mysterious stranger plying kids with candy on the schoolgrounds are just a few who figure into Kate's laundry list of suspects. When a second body turns up, even Michael has to agree that it's beginning to look a lot like murder.
