Tony Soprano is your average, middle-aged businessman. Tony's got a dutiful wife, a not-so-dutiful daughter, a son named Anthony Jr. a mother he's trying to coax into a retirement home, a hot-headed uncle, a not-too-secret mistress and a shrink to tell all his secrets, except the one she already knows: Tony's a mob boss.

Even better than the first time: rewatched this after 15 years for the acting (Gandolfini was marvelous), the writing (the pilot episode is a classic), the ironies. . .

I really don't understand why this series is so beloved. I consider it to be one of the most over-rated of all time. Most of the characters are are either excruciatingly stupid, ridiculously bi-polar, or insultingly Jersey-Italian. I am on season 3 and there have already been four dream sequences - talk about lazy writing. I cringe whenever the mother, Livia, is on camera moaning with her super annoying martyr complex. The subplots with Christopher are beyond boring. Several conversations are repeated. Some type of Italian food with a silly name is referenced every 15 seconds. AND there is surprisingly little action. All this is supposed to make us feel sorry for a bunch of people that lie, cheat, steal, and murder as a way of life. As with all mob related media this really shows Italians in a bad light yet (as a general rule) they love and gravitate to this genre. You would think modern Italians would desire to move on from these comical bad guy stereotypes.

I never watched the show while it was on HBO. I really enjoyed it. It's funny, dramatic and refreshing. I already put a hold on Season 2.

Even though it's been 15 years since season 1 It's truly great drama. The show just keeps your attention because you never know what will happen or how characters will react. I highly recommend it for people who don't have weak stomachs.

This season's set I found dreadfully boring. I kept asking myself each episode whether it was over yet, is it over yet?

Okay, I am hooked. On to Season Two.

This is the series that made HBO what it is today. The extensive story and the characterization involved in a show of this magnitude is evident from the get-go. The finale, "I Dream of Jeannie Cusamano", is one in which things hit the brink. Nothing is as it was, but the question is, what will change in the future? Family life and professional life are colliding and neither is so grand. Things need to change: friends learn things about the people they thought they knew, the business is potentially changing hands, secrets are revealed, and relatives are confronting each other and their own sets of friends, making revelations of their own. Meanwhile, some people are keeping up their facades and the stream of lies keeps flowing, just to keep the family business afloat. The thrill doesn't end here; it's only just beginning. I would highly recommend volume four of the first season of this groundbreaking series.

i had heard several reviews and references to this show over the years, but i never got around to watching it.

i was impressed with season one's development and finale, and so placed holds on seasons two through six. however, toward the end of season two i could tell the writers were blocked or stalling.

now i'm three episodes into season four and the plot seems mostly dead. i find myself constantly fast-forwarding. i've cancelled my holds on seasons five and six.
