The British historian Arnold Toynbee knew many of Britain's leaders, such as T. E. Lawrence (of Lawrence of Arabia fame) and the great socialist Fabians the Tawneys and the Webbs. Toynbee also had a private audience with Adolf Hitler. Unfortunately, Toynbee's accounts are bogged down in unnecessary detail making them long winded and boring. For Toynbee fans only.
