Mind and Brain Sciences in the 21st CenturyMind and Brain Sciences in the 21st Century
Professionals in neurocognition, cognitive science, and psychology ruminate on the past of their disciplines and project them into the future. They consider such matters as whether the mind will become the brain, what to do with your own personal brain scanner, the goals of theory in experimental psychology, and memory trainers. All but one of the 16 essays were written for volume. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.
The approach of the new millennium encourages people to stop and think about where wehave been and where we are going. In these essays, all but one written for this book, many of thosewho have helped to shape the fields of neurocognition, cognitive science, and psychology give theirthoughts on the past and future of the science of mind. Ernest R. Hilgard's foreword presents "APersonal View of 20th Century Psychology: With an Eye to the 21st Century." Some of the essays offerspecific ideas about what the future may hold, while others prefer the grand overview. Some touch onthe philosophical, social, and scientific implications of the science of the mind; a few border onwhimsy or science fiction. All are written to be understood by the informed layperson, as well asprofessionals and students.
The authors of the essays describe their visions ofwhat might be, not what is determined to be. A major goal of the volume is to encourage scientistsand scholars to consider alternative worlds -- to help us to avoid many of the problems of the pastand to create a healthier and more humane future.
