The Lover (1992) is a film that hugely exceeded my expectations. It is a hot and intelligent romance based on an autobiographical novel by Marguerite Dumas. The acting, direction, and settings are superb.

Here’s the IMDB précis:
In 1929 French Indochina, a French teenage girl embarks on a reckless and forbidden romance with a wealthy, older Chinese man, each knowing that knowledge of their affair will bring drastic consequences to each other.

The story told is concise; the sex is not. An existential masterpiece.
I have been accused of a negative bias toward romantic films. Not so. I am only biased against sappy romantic films. This film is the antithesis of sappy. Chick flick of the (last) century!

Directed by Jean-Jacques Annaud in 1992 based on the semi-autobiographical 1984 novel by Marguerite Duras, this drama depicts the illicit affair between a teenage French girl and a wealthy Chinese man in 1929 French Indochina.
The film shows the exotic ambience of Indochina of the day with an unexpected sexuality.
Superb are the performances of Tony Leung and Jane March, who appears as a "nymphet beauty" in her film debut.
The main actors and elegant photography provide a soft-core sensuality.
