When I was 16 I read this in the original French; actually I did not finish the book. When I started watching the movie I felt like reading Stendhal again. But I stopped the movie before the end and gave up reading the book! The only positive thing in this movie is the impeccable historical recreation, but that's all; even the actors are bad... In my view, Stendhal’s only redeeming quality is exactly his writing, which was wonderful—and we no longer find in modern writers, especially the ones who write for younger readers.
