An intriguingly feminist perspective on a classic trope of the inexperienced woman finding love with a sophisticated man. i loved that she was not a sweet, gorgeous young thing. Setting it in the Victorian era seemed convincing, and added to the sexual tension, and yet the determination of the woman to live independently now that she was freed of her duties as a wife and mother made her thoroughly modern. I found the book a slow and somewhat heavy read at times, but that seemed to add to the atmosphere of the story. I'm not giving it a great rating because I never fully bought into the description of the man. I feel like he was described only from an outside perspective. Even though his motives and backstory were explored, I didn't build any empathy for him. Some admiration, but no real understanding.
