Don't shy away from this brilliantly done BBC television movie with Ben Kingsley playing the lead. The movie is faithful to the novel, about a man falsely accused of thievery, becomes a recluse, adopts a child, sees her grow up... okay, it has a happy ending. Acting by all is nuanced, warm and honest. A family movie.

I hadn't read the book, so no idea how true this adaptation is to it. Good acting by a terrific cast, which kept me interested in a fairly tepid story with a very treacly ending.

I've always found George Eliot something of an acquired taste, and I've yet to make the acquisition. This is a 1980s television version of what is probably her best known book. Ben Kingsley's performance is notable, but the placid story doesn't adapt all that well to dramatization. But the bonus feature, a good docudrama on the author's 'scandalous life', is well done and worth watching.
