This is a Classic that takes place in the early 1900's in Brooklyn, New York. It is the story of a family and its main character is a little girl named Francis. She grew up in a neighbourhood of immigrants due to her poverty. It is a good read, although the story doesn't move too fast, it does capture the reader. You feel for the suffering caused by poverty, alcoholism and need of expressed affection, as perceived by the child. You feel for the rushed growing-up Francis and her brother had to do in the face of an adverse environment and hardships. You rejoice with the little pleasures given by the love of books and the love of nature in the eyes of a very sensitive and intelligent girl. You rejoice when they find comfort in each other and internalize the ideals of a good education passed along to them by their family. This story has very tender moments, some happy and many sad; but through all, it is not a depressing story. it is rather a story that is uplifting in the face of despair, motivating and inspiring to the young generations. With the exception of very few passages in the narrative, this book could be suitable for a younger reader too.
