Per the previous comment, Ross Macdonald is more a prince in waiting than a king of hardboiled. As we know, the three kings are Hammett, Chandler, and Cain. Still, he's one of the better of the post-Chandler writers, best-known for his series of Lew Archer novels. This one is not terribly distinctive. Paul Newman played Archer twice on film.

Ross Macdonald is the undisputed king of the hard-boiled detective novel. But his writing transcends the genre to quality literature. THE DOOMSTERS is wonderful for lots of reasons. I finished it the first time, turned back to the beginning and read it again! It won't be the last time either.
