This is a deep movie - filled with the conflict one encounters when trying to pursue an abstract ideal in the real world, in this case, a religious ideal.

It also shows how, in Islamic society, the tenets of Islam permeate every aspect of life (and, not in the distorted way that we see represented in the Western media).

Superbly acted and cast - highly recommended.

A simple, poor, but devout Turkish Muslim is rewarded for these qualities with a big promotion. He is thrown from his simple life into the modern world where he has to make decisions balancing religion with the economic aspects of the modern world. His exposure to the larger world leads him into questions of charity, sexuality, corruption, and near insanity. Actually, just as he is sent into a crazy modern complex world with which he could not cope, so too I was sent into a world that was reminiscent of centuries past where I felt myself losing my bearings.
