Tara Gregson is a wife and mother with dissociative identity disorder (DID). After deciding to go off her medication to discover the real cause of her disorder, her alternate personalties re-emerge. T is a wild and flirty teenager; Alice is an old-fashioned housewife; and Buck is a male, loud, beer-drinking Vietnam Vet. Tara is supported by Max, her calm and level-headed husband; Kate, her somewhat troubled teenage daughter; and Marshall, her quirky, good-hearted gay son. Her sister, Charmaine, is not so supportive, often expressing her doubt about the validity of Tara's disorder.

United States of Tara is a terrific dramedy series with an amazing cast, including Toni Collette, John Corbett, Brie Larson and Patton Oswalt. It was created by Diablo Cody, screenwriter of Juno, Ricki and the Flash and more and author of Candy Girl: A Year in the Life of An Unlikely Stripper. It's a Showtime series, so you should expect sex, drug use and language.

Toni Collette is mesmerizing. John Corbett is in top form. Brie Larson and Keir Gilchrist bring a lot of depth to their roles. How cool is it to see Rosemarie Dewitt in a zesty post-Mad Men role.

I like the way the series uses the concept of DID to explore the idea of identity and role assumption in families, at work and at school. I think it also shows the way a mental illness affects all of the people surrounding the person who is ill. I love that the immediate family is so accepting of the son's sexuality. It is not an issue for them. although they are very quick to close ranks if he is threatened by extended family members.

Wow! What a wak life. It's a shame Hubby can't take advantage of the different personalities as it might give sex a little variety, eh?

I agree. Toni Collette is amazing. I like her best as Tara, of course. I checked this out because the series has received a lot of praise/attention. If you don't like it when you watch the pilot I encourage you to watch on. As the characters develop it gets better and better.

During season one of UST one gets to know Tara as well as her other personalities or alters. Saddled with DID at an early age Tara's
upbringing was difficult on her parents and her sister. Now married with two children, Tara shifts between her various personalities. Tara's family supports her (and her alters) the best they can. In Tara's search for the initial trigger of her DID she goes to therapy and ultimately to an inpatient clinic. Toni Collette is hilarious portraying her various alters. One might also want to watch one of Toni Collette's first movies, Murial's Wedding. In that movie, Toni's character Murial was also slightly off and rocked out to ABBA tunes. Murial's Wedding was made many years before Mama Mia.

This series can be dark at times, but the realism it protrays in the midst of the chaos this illness creates is a portriat of our own daily challenges. By revealing Tara's strengths and weaknesses, we are reminded of challenges and the capability, even with immense odds, to transcend problems.

One of the best cable shows I have seen since Six Feet Under. Like SFU, Tara is a comedy, yet deals with serious issues. Toni Collette is simply amazing as Tara/T/Buck/Alice (and later Gimme). Probably not for everyone's tastes, but if you have an open mind and don't mind a bit of quirkiness in your viewing, you must check out United States of Tara.
