(Lyrics excerpt) - "Why do birds suddenly appear, every time you are near? Just like me, they long to be close to you."
Back in the 1970's, The Carpenters (from New Haven, Connecticut) were, without question, a colossal pop-music sensation from coast to coast (and beyond). In their 14-year career together (as a brother and sister duo) Richard and Karen's albums and singles (of easy-listening tunes) sold over 100 million copies, worldwide.
It was, in particular, Karen Carpenter's pitch perfect, contralto singing voice (which spanned 3 octaves) that won the audiences over, again and again.
This "Best Of" collection is a 2-disc, CD set that contains 40 of The Carpenters' most memorable tunes from the years between 1969-1982. Three of my very favourite songs are - For All We Know, We've Only Just Begun and Solitaire.
*Note* - Sadly enough - In 1983, Karen Carpenter (33 at the time) died from heart failure due to a severe eating disorder known as anorexia nervosa.
There is no one who sings like Karen Carpenter! This is a great compilation of the Carpenters at their best. It is so tragic that Karen died so young. I can only imagine how she would have evolved.
