1999 Oscar winner for Best Foreign Film

Apr 24, 2017

I saw this in the theater in the US when it came out (1999) and it was unlike anything my 20 year old self had seen, which isn't saying much, I know. I spent much of my teens as a closeted lesbian, but had just come back from a freeing backpacking tour through Europe (including Spain) so I was hungry for any Euro cinema. I had no idea who Almodovar was and that the movie I was about to see would have characters that I knew in real life and could identify with. Reading some of the comments here, I'm wondering if it is a stretch for people from a younger generation to understand what the big deal was about this film. In my experience, it was not commonplace to have characters such as these being depicted so artfully yet tastefully and -above all- -genuinely human. Almodovar paved the way for so many others when it came to authentic representations of the LGBT(Q)(A) community. He was(is) also so good at drama drama drama. BIG DRAMA!

A vulgar and ridiculous movie peppered with sentimentality. Why is Almodovar so highly regarded?

Boring, silly, farfetched and pointless. Even if the movie parallels a street car named desire, it is still as ridiculous as a soap-opera

All About My Mother deserved to win the 1999 Academy Award for Best Foreign Film. It is a brilliant film, and one of my favourites. The plot line is completely original and all the characters have such depth. The actors were amazing and brought such life to their characters. One of the best films I have ever seen and I highly recommend it.

There is no wonder why All About My Mother won the Oscar for Best Foreign Film. It accomplishes nearly everything a movie accomplish. The acting is fantastic. The plot is original, yet the themes are somehow still universal when broadened. And despite how crazy it may seem when watching this enthralling movie, it feels believable and sincere from start to finish.

"All About My Mother did not meet expectations," wrote another reviewer. What we need to know is that it parallels "Streetcar Named Desire." Given that, you will enjoy this brilliant film with all its multiple levels. Look beyond the cross dressers, drug zombies and pregnant nuns at the brilliance of this piece.

Fair - All About My Mother (1999) [Foreign - Spanish] 101 min. Different narrative-styled picture that, at times, feels like a soap opera about a woman (played by Cecilia Roth), whose son recently died in a traffic accident, helping a friend and nun (played by Penelope Cruz), who became pregnant with the same man the helping woman had a son with years ago. To top it all off, the man is a cross dresser. Every turn of the picture introduces the viewer to alternative lifestyles. Winner of the Best Foreign Film (2000) did not meet expectations though the acting is top-notched..
