Seeing this for the first time now, without the nostalgia googles of having experienced it as a kid, it's difficult to really enjoy as anything more than a curiosity. It's probably best appreciated for what it represents as a milestone in the history of computer generated effects. Watching it you can see how the point of the movie when released was to have the audience be awed by the visual effects and the mystery of computers. The plot is very simplistic and boils down to overthrowing a bad guy. It's got that 80's earnest corniness to it.
-----The animated series "Tron: Uprising" takes place after this movie and is worth checking out. It's relatively recently produced, the animation is amazing, and the voice acting is top notch. The story is great and explores the idea of programs as life forms living in a digital world much more thoroughly and compellingly than this movie. -----
To fully appreciate this film, you have to put it in context. It's no exaggeration to say that TRON was *the* breakthrough in CGI filmmaking. Yes, the story is full of plotholes. Yes, the dialogue sounds cheesy. Yes, the effects are dated. But without TRON, there would have been no T2, no Toy Story (per John Lasseter), no Matrix, no Lord of the Rings, no Avatar, no Jar Jar Binks (okay, so that one is a downside :) ). This is the granddaddy of them all, establishing that CGI could be used to tell a compelling story and generate effects that were virtually impossible any other way. By that standard alone, this is an incredible film.
But corny as it is, TRON is a fun movie. When I originally saw it in the theater as a kid, it was amazing. Even now, when I can look at it objectively (and with three decades of computer experience), I enjoy it, and love watching it with my kids.
The story's not quite linear at the very beginning, but it's pretty easy to pick up on what's going on. I like Legacy better, but Tron is still a good movie.
why is it called tron. tron isnt even in it hes only in it in the beggining
An amazing technical achievement for 1982. Creative concept - a microscopic computer universe of 'inner space' ruled by an evil 'master control program'. Bad acting... still, it's a pretty cool classic.
No, i never watched this in the 80's but had I my comments would have been more spectacular. Very solid sci-fi for it's time.
A fun concept. Makes me want to play some old video games like pacman or asteroids. Now I want to see the next movie to compare.
The movie was great. I like all special effect in it etc... And those motorcycles they were awesome, i wish they had these in real life.
The original TRON does have a more sensible plot than the new TRON: LEGACY, however the scenes in the movie are out of place and the characters are not properly introduced. As for the special effects and the music, cheap and empty.
Ok. The CGI is beyond outdated. The acting is pretty bad. The story/concept is great. The overall influence the movie had on movies is undeniable. I loved this movie as a kid and upon rewatching I still liked it a lot. Seeing The Big Lebowski acting sort of like the Dude a decade or so before that movie was fun, too. Watch it for what it meant to movies or the pop culture. DON'T watch it expecting a great cinematic experience.
