This is the first time that I'm not going to give a star rating because, while most of the stories were well written, I didn't care for them. I managed to make it thru more then half before quitting. Most of the stories had limited plots and characters and the authors seemed more interested in pondering characters' thoughts or scenery. Some of the endings even baffled me. Some just left you hanging to come to your own conclusion. So if you enjoy writers like Hawthorne or Jules Verne who just loooooove to wax ad nauseum with description, you will love these short stories. But if you like concrete characters, serious action, and/or endings where good triumphs over evil, love is requited, and/or the world is saved, this is NOT the book you want to read.

Most of the stories were vignettes, so self-contained that I cared little for the characters and plot; one in particular was so transparent that even as a short story it seemed too long. I found only a handful interesting or enjoyable, but those made the whole book worth it.

These stories are dark, tend to feature dystopias and sometimes there are no happy ending, it just is. Most of the stories in this compilation weren't to my taste, but I enjoyed the introduction to some new authors and some old favourites.

Some stories are just okay, others are excellent - the usual hazard of an anthology - overall, a book well worth reading
