Ages 7-12. Early chapter book. Extremely well done historical fiction about a boy who is convicted by the Holy Spirit (through Bible reading, sermon, and songs) in a simple but meaningful way to show mercy. He helps an injured Yankee soldier escape to the North during the Civil War, along with the boy's friend, who is a slave and strong believer. Definitely a conversation starter. The toughest section is in the first chapter, where injured soldiers who are missing limbs come past on a wagon. Nothing gorey, but definitely be prepared to talk about war, racism, and slavery.
