Times are hard for newly minted vampire Merit. Ever since shapeshifters announced their presence to the world, humans have been rallying against supernaturals -- and they're camping outside of Cadogan House with protest signs that could turn to pitchforks at any moment. Inside its doors, things between Merit and her Master, green-eyed heartbreaker Ethan Sullivan are...tense. But then the mayor of Chicago calls Merit and Ethan to a clandestine meeting and tells them about a violent vamp attack that has left three women missing. His message is simple: get your House in order. Or else. Merit needs to get to the bottom of this crime, but it doesn't help that she can't tell who's on her side. So she secretly calls in a favor from someone who's tall, dark, and part of underground vamp group that may have some deep intel on the attack. Merit soon finds herself in the heady, dark heart of Chicago's supernatural society-a world full of vampires who seem ready to fulfill the protesting human's worst fears, and a place where she'll learn that you can't be a vampire without getting a little blood on your hands...

I really enjoyed this book. The bantering between Ethan and Merit is one of the things I really liked about this book. Without giving anything away about this book, I was really surprised at the way it ended. Looking forward to the next book to see where it leads Merit.

I guess that's one way to handle it.

It's nice to have a predictable series, where all the characters live until the end, the conflicted love interests remain static and only the bad guys change - if it's a rainy day, and brain candy is what you're looking for. This book takes that and it's a full smack down - the ending is great because it breaks all the standard rules used by most authors and, yep, bye-bye predictability. Loved it. The characters are less developed than I would like, seem to bounce back sooner that you'd think, yet, the intrigue, the strong characters, their real emotions will ensure I continue with this series.

Loved the series, loved the flawed characters with all their quirks. Had it listed in top 5 series. But the end !!!! I was so sad and so mad at Chloe at the end. Does she not understand the real world is bad enough and we escape into fantasy to avoid the sadness. It is going to take a lot to redeem this series for me. I await the next book.

Whew...obviously, some changes are in store in the next book. Merit continues to learn her craft & gains new appreciation for vampire (and human) politics. Instead of churning out more of the same, the author takes some risks & I like that no character is safe so you don't see the ending coming from a mile away.

This one, like the previous 3 was great... Other readers seem to be disturbed by the ending, but without giving anything away...for those of us who believe in magic (wink wink), and were avid Buffy watchers...you should know by now that the end is sometimes just the beginning... I have a feeling we'll be seeing certain characters again. Mallory is learning healing magic remember.... I, for one, can't wait for book 5!

I have to say that this series was wonderful until the end. Please do not read unless you want heartache and an unhappy ending. I have to say even knowing that there is another book, no matter the outcome I would never recomend this book to anyone!!

On other sites, the average rating was about 3 to 3.5 stars out of 5. I rated 4 stars. Despite the ending, overall it was a good book and I'm looking forward to the 5th one.
