This movie is gruesome and hugely entertaining. Hunger Games is a bit whimpy compared to this flick!

Extremely violent but awesome Japanese cult classic. This was released more than ten years before The Hunger Games, but I'm not going to say that it's better. The acting by many of the supporting characters is oftentimes unintentionally silly and you'll find better character development in the source novel (and even the graphic novels). Despite these flaws, and occaisionally disturbing (albeit incredibly cartoony and unrealistic) violence, it's a very fun movie to watch. The action scenes are incredibly well executed, Takeshi Kitano plays an amazing sad-movie villain, and the emotional bond between the main characters, especially near the end of the film is quite admirable. It's essential viewing for film-savvy older teens.

The original HUNGER GAMES. Need I say more? I definitely recommend it.

READ THE BOOK. Or at least read the manga.

Another page out of Takeshi Kitano's "Nihilism for Dummies"... But the scene where " female students for peace" break out into a full scale firefight while preparing lunch in the kitchen is absolutely hysterical.

CLASSIC! I wonder if this was the inspiration of Hunger Games. I've seen other directors take on a similar idea but fail horribly. Battle Royale is amazingly done. Great actors, excellent Director, the setting and camera work is brilliant. Hunger Games is the only version that has been similar that has interested me since Battle Royale. Definite Japanese horror movie staple.

While this may have been the inspiration behind Hunger Games, HG is a much better movie.

I loved this teen tokyo gore survival action flick. This had to have inspired The Hunger Games. Wildly entertaining throughout. Not the best acting or special effects, but both were passable to compliment a great concept. I enjoy the genre and this was one of the better examples of it. The english voice overs are awful. Watch in Japanese with subtitles.

Rather interesting movie. Definitely an interesting solution to the growing problem of child disobedience. Nicely done in the way of acting and portrayal. Funny how after reading/watching The Hunger Games I saw so many things that happened there and in Battle Royale. One to watch but just be prepared for some ideas and scenes that will be disturbing.

Violence: Very intense but also incredibly cartoonish and unrealistic throughout. Knives and guns of (almost) all types are used and there's lots of blood and gore. Some upsetting deaths, including a few suicides. Some suggested sexual violence (all off-camera).
