It is the summer of 1956, and the aging butler of Darlington Hall takes a rare holiday. But it is a journey that will also take him deep into his past. The Remains of the Day is a remarkable story: a man's exploration of his own life, and his heart-breaking attempt to make sense of it.

The narration of this audiobook is among the best I've ever heard, it certainly makes the book better too. Self-discipline and dignity combine to a diabolical form of most polite torture.

I loved listening to this novel. It seemed to end somewhat abruptly though with no acknowledgement that this was the end of the book like all the other audio books I've read.
I loved the preciseness that seems to be characteristic of all things British.
I was sure hoping for some insight on the part of the butler, Mr. Stevens, that he needed to be a bit more human and not such a perfectionistic robotic person, totally married to his role as a great, dignified butler.
The author's note sheds light on how a person of Japanese decent could write about this aspect of British culture.
