Though it has some nice moments, and Elliot the Dragon is rather fantastic, the movie as a whole has not aged well and is generally inferior compared to Mary Poppins.

A fun musical that mixes animation with live-action to produce a classic tale of friendship, family, and mischief. A colorful cast of characters--including a boy, a dragon, a lighthouse-keeper and her sometimes-inebriated father, pair of shady traveling salesmen, a filthy family on a mission to reclaim their "property," a sailor lost at sea--bring the story and songs to charming life. On a personal note, I just love how Eliot speaks!

Purely a youngster's movie. Concept of selling a kid could be used to keep a naughty kid in line. Early application of anime mixed with real actors. Happy feel good movie - perfect for a young family.

The original is always the BEST and that goes for 1976 version of Pete's Dragon starring Helen Reddy & Mickey Rooney.

Pete's Dragon holds up much better then I thought it would. Certainly the blue screen is pretty obvious but it isn't so bad as to be distracting. The storey is really cute and the song's are very well done. It is really a throw back to musicals of a past age. Very similar to say Mary Poppins or even that old Popeye movie with Robin Williams. It's funny how times have changed with drinking in kids movies too. Mickey Rooney spends the first half of the movie drunk as a skunk! My 3 1/2 year old actually really enjoyed Pete's Dragon, whereas I thought she'd be bored. Maybe this would be a fun cute movie to introduce to your child!
