I didn't want to read it at first because of the 400 page length. However, I gritted my teeth an dug in and promptly got lost in the world of basketball. Two high school friends (star player black and his best friend is white) play ball and colleges try to recruit them. I initially started to enjoy it because of how the coach stood up for his team and protected them. Then I started to enjoy it for the easy friendship the boys had. Then I had a brilliant flash of insight that may be all of these people that they were mentioning might be real coaches. And guess what.......??! They are. John Calipari is a real coach for Kentucky. And he does have a nasty habit of doing under the table deals, changing schools and letting them deal with the consequences. My jaw dropped once I started doing the online lookup. I'm 100% sure that the typical teenage boy will instantly recognize the names. However what really got to me was how the emphasis was to be careful of selecting colleges based on what they were buying you. I already knew this was a problem, but this book really slammed it home. I think it's a great selection, because it's not too preachy but it definitely helps you to see that there is a dark side and to not be so naive. Instead make a smart choice for the long term. On a completely side note, race is there but it's definitely in the backseat. Also, the ending is beautiful.
