Heralded by the New York Times and Time as the couples therapy with the highest rate of success, Emotionally Focused Therapy works because it views the love relationship as an attachment bond.

This idea, once controversial, is now supported by science, and has become widely popular among therapists around the world. In Hold Me Tight, Dr. Sue Johnson presents Emotionally Focused Therapy to the general public for the first time. Johnson teaches that the way to save and enrich a relationship is to reestablish safe emotional connection and preserve the attachment bond. With this in mind, she focuses on key moments in a relationship-from "Recognizing the Demon Dialogue" to "Revisiting a Rocky Moment" -- and uses them as touch points for seven healing conversations.

Through case studies from her practice, illuminating advice, and practical exercises, couples will learn how to nurture their relationships and ensure a lifetime of love.

I think everyone should read this book! It is meant for couples, but I've enjoyed the content solo, as my husband refuses to read it with me. Its been so helpful for me to read & understand these concepts that are perhaps obvious but I had forgotten how essential they were.

This is a valuable book for willing couples who desire a task-oriented program as it presents examples of real life couples in therapy with the author. Sue Johnson’s language and explanations are clear and realistic as she guides couples in how to navigate conflict using focused, productive conversations. If it sounds formulaic, it is to a certain extent, but it is those tools - which need practice and repetition - that offer hope. Much more reliant than scrambling directionless through the muck of old patterns … you always do/say that - sound familiar? A very worthwhile read for all couples, regardless of where they are on their couples journey.
And when there is only one willing partner, the book’s practical exercises in hearing and expressing basic attachment needs, a theory backed by solid research, helps to sort through the layers of the reader’s own psyche.

Incredible book, had to go out and buy it when I finished it, one I'll read again and again. Really helps one to understand why we have the problems we have and real ways to deal with them.

The concepts in this book are really exceptional, but poorly explained. Any guy deserves an award if he reads the book. Essentially, most couple fights are about people's deepest fears, not about what they are actually fighting about.

In "Hold Me Tight," Susan Johnson asserts that accessibility, responsiveness and engagement in the emotional bond provide the keys to a couple's happiness and satisfaction. She uses attachment theory to explain how partners love and why they fight and she demonstrates the human desire for connection: we constantly seek it, we thrive when we have it, we suffer when we don't, we fight for it when it's threatened and we grieve when it is gone.

Drawing on years of clinical research, Johnson presents a program of discovery and growth to help couples develop stronger bonds. Through her seven conversations, she untangles vicious cycles of interaction, explores underlying emotions and creates new strategies for dialogue. Although it may not contain the most recent research on relationships, "Hold Me Tight" provides intelligent and insightful advice to help couples tackle their core issues.
