It's 1917, on the eve of the Russian Revolution, and a young doctor (Radcliffe) arrives in the middle of the night to lead an eerie, back-woods hospital. Fresh from med school, he is completely unprepared for the bizarre people and alarming medical maladies that face him, so, in an unexpected twist, he turns to his older self (Hamm) for advice. It's a fascinating, dark and original comedy with two of Hollywood's leading talents that surprises and entertains in a wholly unique way.

Wow--this wasn't at all like I expected. I thought it was be very proper a la Downton Abbey but instead I was treated to some black comedy! Highly recommend. Daniel Radcliffe is excellent, and I loved seeing Jon Hamm as Radcliffe's older and wiser counterpart.

A pretty campy mini-series based on a novel by Mikhail Bulgakov. There are some silly, funny moments - Daniel Radcliffe is actually really good in a role like that (see Swiss Army Man). I thought it was cool how the young doctor and old doctor were juxtaposed and able to communicate with each other in the doctor's memory of events. He even tried to save himself from drug addiction and the future he is living, but it ends up being futile. Very different type of show, but pretty fun.

Didn't even make 10 mins. Daniel as a Russian Dr. with an English accent please. Will try his other movie.

Incredibly original, thought-provoking and not for the squeamish. Radcliffe plays the role very well of the idealist doctor beaten to submission by the bleak and miserable conditions faced in backwoods 1917 Russia.

Is there a 'second' season to this black comedy series?

This DVD collects the first four episodes of BBC's excellent mini-series "A Young Doctor's Notebook, based on a collection of short stories by Russian writer Mikhail Bulgakov. This is well-crafted pitch-black comedy, with moments of horror, drama, and farce. The dramatic elements increase as the episodes progress. The titular character is played by both Daniel Radcliffe (past) and Jon Hamm ("present"). Recommended for fans of black comedic Russian humor. one caveat: there is a bit of body horror/blood/gore and drug use throughout. Not one for the kids!

Excellent heartbreaking comedy. Bulkakov translated brilliantly to film. Superb acting. Helps to have some prior knowledge of the time and place. The classic Russian sensibility. Five stars.

Opening monologue: Moscow, 1934. They say happiness is like good health. You don't notice it until it's gone. Me...I was happy in 1917. I had just graduated from the University Imperial Medicine and Dentistry of Moscow, when I was sent in the remote village of Muryovo to run a hospital. It was a long and arduous journey.
This journey takes long to get used to. ... Farewell to Moscow, Farewell to the red and gold Bolshoi theatre. Farewell to... shop windows.
...
Seven years. Finest university in all Russia. All that hard work... to reach the top of the class. And for what? I'm not a doctor. I'm a butcher. And a seamstress.
