In a near future, an alien race has hit the Earth in an unbeatable assault. Major William Cage has never seen a day of combat, but is dropped into a suicide mission and killed within minutes. Cage now finds himself thrown into a time loop-forcing him to live out the same day over and over, fighting and dying each time. With each life, Cage learns more fighting skills, so that when he and warrior Rita Vrataski take the fight to the aliens, they are one step closer to defeating the enemy.

Combine "Star Ship Troopers" with "Independence Day" and "Groundhog Day" yes I'm not kidding "Groundhog Day"; farely dark with very little comedy relief though. Looks to be a British movie with only one other American actor besides Cruz. The picture was too dark in the end battle so try watching it with all the lights off.
As in the other two Si-Fi war movies mentioned; all the nations of Earth have united to fight the alien invaders. Let us hope that's not what it will take to unite us.

First the good news: director Doug Liman has made the archetypal “Summer Blockbuster” with appropriately awesome special effects and lots of stuff blowing up in teeth-rattling stereophonic sound. Meanwhile, against those green screen backdrops of London under siege and Paris in ruins, Cruise and Blunt manage to produce a likeable chemistry which morphs into an awkward romance (how do you woo someone who has to shoot you in the head in order to reboot each time you get into trouble?). But there is nothing fresh to offer here nor is the central premise—itself full of logical conundrums—particularly novel. Although based on a Japanese manga, Liman borrows rather heavily from too many obvious sources: "Groundhog Day" immediately comes to mind as does the gung-ho testosterone and armoured body suits of "Starship Troopers". Then there’s the aliens, looking like spinning balls of angry yarn, who bear more than a passing resemblance to the jiggly squids from "The Matrix". And Liman ends it all with a stretch so outrageous you have to give him credit for sheer chutzpah if nothing else. An entertaining no-brainer the first time around, but not worth revisiting

Not a Cruise fan but in this one the female lead helps him be an actor in a group rather than ME-ME ME. The concept is rather idiotic but somehow you manage to ignore it due to the well done action in the battle scenes. First contact seems to be a very iffy thing and if they come to us we are likely doomed unless the aliens are very benevolent. They will be millions of years ahead of us technically and hopefully ethically.

Clever and well made. I love Emily Blunt, and Tom Cruise was good in this too.
One of the better sci fi flicks I've seen in recent times.
Bubblegum, but slick and fun.

Not a big Tom Cruise fan, but I think because he was neck and neck with Emily Blunt, it made it fun. I see Bill Paxton in a lot of films I didn’t know he was in. RIP. Sci Fi

Bill Murray in Groundhog's Day and Nicolas Cage in Next did similar concepts. This is more a war, or Starship Troopers type, film. It has interesting aspects.

A high budget poor substitute for Gound Hogs Day.

Not into alien movies but I gave it a shot. The plot is silly, the acting poor, and the conclusion unsurprising.

This is one of those movies I can watch again and again. It has action, aliens, a great story, and bad-ass characters. Its Groundhog Day meets Starship Troopers in the best way possible. Plus, Emily Blunt is outstanding as Rita. Just remember, "battle is the great redeemer. It is the fiery crucible in which true heroes are forged."

Frightening or Intense Scenes: If you suffer from PTSD then the first battle scene may set off some flashbacks or anxiety. It's graphic and tense. Not a reason not to watch it, just fair warning that it might be unsettling for some.

Tons more in IMDb:

Lt. Col. Bill Cage: Master Sergeant Farell, you're an American.
Master Sergeant Farell: *No,* sir. I'm from *Kentucky.*

Master Sergeant Farell: Battle is the Great Redeemer. It is the fiery crucible in which true heroes are forged. The one place where all men truly share the same rank, regardless of what kind of parasitic scum they were going in.

Soldier Ford: I thought you could see the future?!
Maj. William Cage: I haven't lived this day yet.
