A free-flowing, freewheeling, counter-culture comedy set during the turbulent 60's adapted from Guthrie's musical monologue Alice's Restaurant Massacre. Guthrie portrays the embodiment of America's youth, a young man who sees his life beginning to unravel through psychedelic drug -fueled haze, as he and his friends (and the plot) spin toward an explosive conclusion.

This is a comedy classic!

An cool representation of the 1969 hippie counter-culture, but not much of a story. The lady who played Alice was a pretty bad actress.

Great song; not-so-great movie.

Necessary viewing for anyone who wants to divine the spirit of the '60s cultural revolution. Not what you would expect if you have never seen it, or, if you are like me, you haven't seen it since you were a kid. It's not merely a rollicking Dylanesque antiwar yarn that celebrates the Hippie. ALICE'S RESTAURANT is a spot-on indictment of Hippie culture: the squalid, narcissistic indulgence of communal living; the damaging aspects of free love; the drugs and alcohol; the flame out and inevitable failure.

It was fun to watch this again. I first saw it was I was 14. My husband and I laughed at the clothes. We thought it made a great political statement.

Well now, I can see them slappin' an R-ratin' on this thing for showin' skinny guys in high-waisted jockey shorts sittin' there on the group dubya bench an all. But what I don't get is the 18 years and over only thing, where you got to go to the librarian and show your ID, and they reach behind the counter where they keep all them other amoral type things. Maybe it was showin' all that smokin' at the hospital. I bet that's it. Or maybe it was the guy at the army medical who looked creepy similar to Ollie North. Oh, no. I know what it was. It was dumpin' all that garbage. No recyclin' a-tall. Only for the eyes of the hardened criminal and other sorts of mean, ugly, nasty things. oh and PS: Other than Arlo, Officer 'Obie' (AKA William Obanhein) plays himself in the movie, and Alice herself plays "Suzy".

It might be considered a classic by some, but not me. Managed to get through the first 30 minutes or so but then gave it up. Granted the song "Alice's Restaurant" by Arlo Guthrie is rather interesting to listen to, but the movie didn't cut it.
