The vast majority of premature deaths can be prevented through simple changes in diet and lifestyle. Physician Michael Greger examines the fifteen top causes of premature death in America -- heart disease, cancers, diabetes, Parkinson's, high blood pressure, and more -- and explains how nutritional and lifestyle interventions can sometimes trump prescription pills and other pharmaceutical and surgical approaches, freeing us to live healthier lives. The simple truth is that most doctors are good at treating acute illnesses but bad at preventing chronic disease. By following Dr. Greger's advice, all of it backed up by strong scientific evidence, you will learn which foods to eat and which lifestyle changes to make to live longer.

Summary of book: meat bad, eat a plant based diet. The book is set up in two parts, the first goes through the specifics for various diseases like heart disease, cancers, infections, etc. The second part has information on foods that could be especially useful. Here are my comments on a few things: the section on diabetes will probably not be that helpful to most people. For much, much better information read Jason Fung's books The Diabetes Code and also The Obesity Code. The second thing is the author does not make any allowances for any conditions that people may have like Celiac Disease, autoimmune conditions, or food allergies. In the chapter on Whole Grains, he skims over Celiac Disease and ends up arguing that people who think they may be bothered by gluten (people who do not have Celiac Disease) probably are being bothered by something else. No real suggestions on what people with Celiac Disease or other immune conditions should do though. In the end I found this book to be profoundly irritating to read and skipped over quite a few sections as they were repetitive.

I love how this book really bashes on the American diet. I thought it was common sense that the American diet is pretty bad in regards to health; but, apparently not considering that Americans still don't want to change their diet. This is a pretty good sized book but I like how it is broken down into sections that focus on how to keep certain organs going. I also really liked how it cites all of its information and research, making it a credible source of information. The book does use a lot of science and science words so if you are not a science person some of this book might be hard to follow when it explains the science behind dietary choices.

Greger is the MAN. In layman's terms he shows being healthy isn't that hard and is actually satisfying.

Dr. Michael Greger is the founder of the very popular website He is a longtime advocate of plant-based eating and has discussed and demonstrated time after time how important this type of diet is. In many cases, eating a plant-based diet causes the body to respond much more quickly and dramatically than it will to any pills or injections which the medical industry bombards us with. This book is a compilation of the best and latest information from the website and from Dr. Greger’s own research. The first 15 chapters cover how not to die from heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer, diabetes, Parkinson’s, etc. Each chapter contains clearly explained concepts and information from various studies, and how to apply them to your daily life. The book is fascinating reading and can actually be read in whatever order is important to you, since each chapter is self-contained. There are not really many recipes, as is common among diet and nutrition books, but Dr. Greger takes the second half of this volume to cover individually his “Daily Dozen” foods which should be eaten every day. Over the years I have read countless books on diet and nutrition and this one is a mandatory addition to your bookshelf.

Follows nutrition information we've heard, but not followed, for years. It's well written and can prolong a good life. Excellent advice.

Changed my diet. This book is a great reference and filled with information, backed by studies. It is broken down into sections of the most common causes of death so easy to jump back and forth based on what sections interest you the most. I recommend this to any one that is concerned with their health and want to make positive changes. Some are easier to do than others, such as 1 tablespoon of flax a day, vs never eating dairy. But, all are well researched and backed by facts.

Great read!!

A lot of well-researched information about how diet affects health. The anecdotes, especially the initial story about the author's grandma, made the information more relatable. Checking out the cookbook next!

If you tried reading the book and found it overwhelming, try the audiobook. Also Dr. Greger’s website, YouTube channel and podcasts are wonderful places to gain even more knowledge.
