An explosive, headline-making portrait of Allen Dulles, the man who transformed the CIA into the most powerful—and secretive—colossus in Washington, from the founder of and author of the New York Times bestseller Brothers.

America’s greatest untold story: the United States’ rise to world dominance under the guile of Allen Welsh Dulles, the longest-serving director of the CIA. Drawing on revelatory new materials—including newly discovered U.S. government documents, U.S. and European intelligence sources, the personal correspondence and journals of Allen Dulles’s wife and mistress, and exclusive interviews with the children of prominent CIA officials—Talbot reveals the underside of one of America’s most powerful and influential figures.

Dulles’s decade as the director of the CIA—which he used to further his public and private agendas—were dark times in American politics. Calling himself “the secretary of state of unfriendly countries,” Dulles saw himself as above the elected law, manipulating and subverting American presidents in the pursuit of his personal interests and those of the wealthy elite he counted as his friends and clients—colluding with Nazi-controlled cartels, German war criminals, and Mafiosi in the process. Targeting foreign leaders for assassination and overthrowing nationalist governments not in line with his political aims, Dulles employed those same tactics to further his goals at home, Talbot charges, offering shocking new evidence in the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

An exposé of American power that is as disturbing as it is timely, The Devil’s Chessboard is a provocative and gripping story of the rise of the national security state—and the battle for America’s soul.

Finest book ever! Instead of propaganda history, we get the real thing from the incredibly talented David Talbot [and did I say honest?]! ! !
Regarding the JFK assassination, after reading about the Dulles brothers, specifically Allen, and their coven, and Richard Nixon, you will be unspeakably, and many times, nauseatingly, amazed!
So George de Mohrenschildt, high society type, nephew of the daughter of the first Federal Reserve Bank chairman, and nephew of the CEO of Nobel Enterprises, major Euro oil firm, hung with the lowly Lee Oswald???????
So D.H. Byrd, owner of the Texas School Book Depository, financially connected to the Bush-Walker family going back several generations, belonging to the Dallas Petroleum Club along with other Texas oil men, and David Atlee Phillips of the CIA, George H.W. Bush - - then of the CIA, Dallas Mayor Earl Cabell, brother to fired CIA Deputy Director Gen. Cabell, George de Mohrenschildt et al., wasn't even on the Warren Commission's radar?
And how is the CIA simply a Nazi operation extended? Listen to this CD! But what Mr. Talbot does so well, over a broad and incredibly informative narrative, is show how the murders of Jacobo Arbenz, Patrice Lumumba, John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King, Jr., Bobby Kennedy, and Salvador Allende were really one continuous operation in play.

Of course, the JFK assassination had to be just what the Allen Dulles- and John McCloy-led Warren Commission said it was, after all, those two were absolute psychopaths, with McCloy getting the most heinous, monstrous butchers from Hitler's Third Reich their freedom [live dissections of humans, what worse depravity could there possibly be????] because they once worked at the same company his law firm represented [IG Farben, et cetera] and Allen Dulles the conduit for mass murdering Nazis to escape from trial, later not coicidentally ending up advising various bloody dictators the CIA helped assume power after their coups.
Since the owner of the Texas School Book Depository, D.H. Byrd, one sneaky and crafty insider trader type and Texas oilman, belonged to the Dallas Petroleum Club [other members: more Texas oil men, plus David Atlee Phillips of the CIA, George H.W. Bush, then of the CIA and Zapata, George de Mohrenschildt, Mayor Earl Cabell, brother of fired CIA deputy director, Gen. Cabell, et al.]. Byrd was not only a close buddy and donor to Lyndon Johnson, his family was financially connected to the Bush-Walker family for at least several generations, and his investments in LTV made a fortune for him from the Vietnam War. Just a coincidence, of course! One knew Richard Nixon was evil, but I never fully grasped just how endlessly evil, until I read this book on the Satanical Dulles!
