sad that michelle is the only one still alive. she was, like, the hottest mama of all the hot mamas of the 60s. there was a point during this band's existence when they fired her and replaced her with a blonde singer. that did not last long. I wonder if the records made with the replacement singer were any good. she claims these days to have been a co-writer, while she was married to John. I'm talking CALIFORNIA DREAMING, here....and, maybe, the replacement singer was hired for the touring going on then. worth recording that this group covered a Beatles tune: I CALL YOUR NAME, in their own inimitable style. the local public tv station ran a fundraiser using the Mamas and the Papas, last night. I was struck by how ill-looking Denny Doherty was toward the end of his life. michelle, being interviewed, slagged off the song, MONDAY MONDAY. when it was being written she had the same negative reaction. Papa John, said the meaning of the song is enigmatic. i find it buoyant, and pessimistic at the same time. Mind you, the lead singing is by the tenor, Doherty.
The Mamas and the Papas on two cd's without a wasted track. The cd's are great throughout the lineup. Had I heard them all? Not by a long shot! What a pleasant surprise that I liked even the cuts I hadn't previously heard. There is a box set of Mamas and Papas that I did have problems with. There are four cd's in that package (The Anthology) and many of the cuts are really best forgotten. Here we are only dealing with the gold recordings. The payoff is just what the doctor ordered!
