This is a bleak dystopian tale - a bit surrealistic - taking place in a near future society; a story of alienation in relationships, and also, outside of relationships. A story of savage cruelty, uncaring, total loss of direction whether you're part of the mainstream or part of the alternative - and yet, also a love story between two people in this weird world who discover actual human feelings for one another - and try to somehow find a place for themselves and their love .. in this world that doesn't seem to have any place for real human connections .. SPOILER .. they don't really make it. Or, you could say, we're left not really knowing or having much hope - it seems they are being defeated - or perhaps, they will defeat themselves.

It's extremely well made, socially insightful, and certainly interesting and worthwhile for serious students of film, but also, very disturbing and troubling.

I'm leaving a review because the movie is recommended and categorized as a comedy that is "wickedly funny." It has its biting satiric moments, but it's nothing of the sort - and I took it out because I thought it would be entertaining, uplifting and a lot of fun laughs. So ... if that's what you're looking for, don't watch this film.

Not only that, almost every preview is for the most chilling horror movies imaginable. I don't watch horror movies or horror previews (the horrors in real life are enough for me}. So .. I felt cheated and violated - suddenly there was a slew of them, one after the next .. I'm sitting through this gruesome vile stuff (though granted, in the category of artistic horror vs B/C rated Chucky stuff with a chainsaw - but pretty close to Chucky) - and in order to get to the film I thought I picked, light-hearted comedy with some social satire - at which point, I was already wondering what this film was *really* going to be about, given the selected previews.

It's not a horror film, though it defies category, in a way - and I guess the preview editors were too dumb and lazy to figure out the compatible previews to put with it. I think they need a rating system just for horror - and, in the case of this film - which is not horror but very disturbing on another level - they should at least be honest about what you're getting yourself into watching. Yeah, I know I could turn it off, but I'm not like that when I"m looking at art .. and it is art.

The acting, the film-making, the direction, the music - excellent (3 stars for that). But that doesn't mean you want to see it - or that you agree with the filmmaker's bleak and depressing view of human relationships and the future of humanity. I didn't need to see this. Some people do, I'm sure - but not I. Also - one critic claims it's so original. I don't think it's so original - the film is quite a commendable and original work in its own right - but it's very easy and unoriginal to be that bleepin' bleak (minus a star). And ... by the last couple of scenes, I was tired of what was going on, the story was losing me (minus a star), and I was checking the clock to see how much more I'd have to watch to find out what happens (i.e. "Hang in there - you've come this far - it's almost over.")

So I was kind of peeved. And .. I took the time to sit through this film I was hoodwinked into watching by the critics' deceptive descriptions .. plus those horror previews - so I'm taking the time to leave a piece of my own POV (and back).

Making this movie was a waste of time and money. Its rather sick really. A much better story could have been made of it. Thumbs down.

Some interesting social commentary, and some entertaining goofiness but sliding into the territory of absurdism. Not entirely my thing.

As at least one other commenter says (below), I was excited to watch this movie...until I started watching this movie. Gave up on it before it was half over and wish I had bailed sooner. While the violence takes place offscreen (at least in the first half), you can't escape the effects, and they are gruesome. I don't ask for all art to be deep and meaningful - but if it's not going to be illuminating somehow, I'd like for it to be entertaining. This didn't give me anything - and instead, left me with some pretty disturbing images I can't get rid of. The trailer makes it look quirky and delightful and amusing. Don't be fooled. It's quirky all right, but not delightful or amusing at all.

A very odd but beautiful love story. If you don't understand I highly recommend watching the special feature, that helped explained a lot.

Didn't understand the purpose of this film. Turned it off half way through.

It was interesting enough for me to have ended up watching the whole thing, but this is less of a compliment and more of a regret. Since it started intriguingly and hilariously as the film sort of promised, but then quickly devolved into something I had very little ability to connect with or enjoy. Once it began getting more and more weird with less payback in comedy or meaning (at least for me), I began to slowly become depressed that I had chosen excitedly to watch this film that night instead of picking a different one, or at least having the foresight to have stopped it sooner. I never make sassy, negative comments, but here's mine for this one: I would have rather turned into a lobster than sat through that. Lol

***Spoiler Alert***
Why a lobster?
-Because lobster live for over one hundred years. Are blue blood like aristocrat... and stay fertile all their life. I also like the sea very much. I water ski, swim quite well since I was a teenager.
-I must congratulate you, the first thing most people think of is a dog... which is why the world is full of dogs. Very few people choose unusual animal... which is why they are in danger.

Back when you loved me, you asked me one morning while we were talking: "what was life about?" I turned and told you ... for some it's the wine, for some it's the glory, for some it's being rich, but for me it is only you ... Now that your heart has changed and you love someone else, you still wonder what they're saying. How my own heart beats. Are there perhaps more people like me exist. Dead on the inside. Alive on the outside.

What's worse? to die of cold and hunger in the woods, to become a animal would be killed or eaten by some big animal, or have nose bleed from time to time.
===
We all dance by ourselves. That's why we only play electronic music.

What does the photograph show?
-A naked woman on a horse in the country.
If I were in your shoes I would not be ogling the naked woman but the horse. I'm sure that horse's once a weak and cowardly man...
just like you

One day, as he was playing golf, he thought that it is more difficult to pretend you do have feelings
when you don't... than to pretend you don't have feelings when you do.
===
If this woman die, do you think you manage on you own? Or will you get involve with someone else?
-No, I can live alone. She can't. I'm on my own for hours when she got out the hotel. I like sitting in the room... relaxes me, calms me. I like it a lot. I can definitely live on my own.
===
The most important thing is that you're not bald. However when comes to men, bald is always the possibility you can't avoid. ls your father bald?
-No he isn't. And even if someday I lose my hair, there are things I can do to get my hair back. I can have a hair transplant.
You always can tell someone had a hair transplant.
-I know.
Nice hair is not something you can get. It's something you born with. The fact your father isn't bald shouldn't put you at ease.
