I'm surprised that the comments about this movie are so negative because I enjoyed it, despite a few reservations (spoilers ahead!!!)

This is not a sequel to the 1991 Disney version. I like to think of it more like a companion Christmas movie. It generally follows the same storyline as the movie in regards to the old woman giving the Beast the rose, and the characters not yet being human. It has the same cast of characters/voices (Belle, The Beast, Mrs. Potts, Chip, Cogsworth, Lumiere, etc) with the addition of the characters of Forte (a pipe organ who is somewhat of a villain) and a Christmas ornament named Angelique.

The storyline here is a little darker than the original movie. The Beast was much angrier and a little over the top, the way he punished Belle because she wanted to celebrate Christmas in the castle and he did not. In this version, the old woman gave him the rose at Christmastime and then changed them all from their human selves, which is why he does not like Christmas. There's a slight swear word (hell) in a song by Forte, which surprised me and I barely noticed it but I had to rewind the DVD to make sure that I heard it correctly, so just be forewarned. Nothing major and nothing worse than what's on TV these days. Other than that, it's a very sweet and clean movie and it has original Christmas songs so think of it as a Christmas version of the 1991 movie.

Until tonight I hadn't seen this movie since it came out in 1997 and unfortunately it wasn't as good as I remember, and therefore a slight disappointment. However I would watch this again and I plan to do so before I return it to the library.

Contents are extracted from original story. It is difficult to understand if you do not see original story. When seeing film, my kids made questions: 'why' and I had to original story to explain them.
