First rate murder mystery. A must watch for all who enjoy this genre TV show.

I preferred the shorter stories in Season 1 and 2, because you can watch an episode in one evening and you're done. With season 3 the story is just drawn out for 6 episodes . I must say I never clued in who was the guilty party and thought it was really interesting.

So far out of the first four seasons I found this one to be the best. I have found myself enjoying this cops series and I find it to be refreshing. Good thing Shetland has a fairy boat to the island as so far in the first fours series there has been so many murders to solve that I was getting afraid there was just not enough people on the island to keep the show going. But with the fairy boat new victims can always be brought to the island in Scotland. Shetland Scotland has a population of 23 080 in 2017.

Very good. Even better than Series 1 and 2 which I liked a great deal. The switch to 6 episodes for one main story works really well. As usual the actors are wonderful and the scenery beautiful. Highly recommend.

Disappointing. Many trite and uninteresting sub-plots. Unbelievably convoluted story. Not the BBC’s best effort.

My wife and I totally enjoyed all three Seasons of this excellent TV series from the BBC. Very much looking forward to seeing Season 4 now. Also heard that they are planning to do Season 5. With the same cast and script quality this will be money well spent. The Scottish accent presented no problem to us as we watched it with subtitles - just in case we missed something.

For some unknown reason to me, I just felt mediocre with this. Love the scenery, the local lore, the decent mystery aspect and some of the actors. Since I've not seen the first or second season I can't comment on the local slang, it takes practice or frequency to understand - but subtitles sure help. The Shetland speak is not as lyrical as Orkadian, but the bleakness is the same. Even when reading this series many years back I struggled to fit the pieces together about Perez & his past. Do love James Cosmo in any character. Miss Archie Punjab as she was on Good Wife.

I really enjoyed this 6-part mystery series. Characters are better developed and more realistic than in most detective shows. A few other reviewers questioned whether Scottish or Shetland accents should be played up or down. I imagine the intended audience is larger than Scotland and Shetland so accurate dialects may or may not be emphasized. A few unrealistic things happen to allow for plot twists through a 6 episode evolving crime mystery. These less realistic blips seemed excusable given the well-developed main characters who looked and acted more like real people and law enforcement colleagues.

Shetland and Scotland locations are depicted in a bleak light to match the gritty tone of the crime story. Fortunately the treatment of contemporary inter-racial, LGBT, and sexism issues were handled well. Story includes a realistic balance of diverse character types. Some women were depicted as gluttons for punishment with abusive situations, but such naive people do exist. Overall I enjoyed the show very much. Most of the story requires a willing suspension of disbelief.

An amazingly well crafted & acted series of crime stories with superb performances by all the actors.

I highly recommend this entire series!

I wonder how many people complained--because season three really toned down the accents and stopped using slang that only those from Scotland would know! I really enjoy the series, and don't mind "rewinding" to figure our what they said. Good plots, good acting, lovely scenery.
