Pointless, and an absolute waste of time!

Imaginative fairy tales for adults with unseemly tastes. Relentless scenes of shocking and absurd bizarre royal wickedness, duplicity and obsessions, but all within the realm of fairy tales. The only reality were the Lees brothers. Filmed in gorgeous medieval Italian locations. Well worth a watch for pure entertainment.

It's not for everyone, as others have said. But this film is beautiful, colorful, and ultimately not about Happily Ever After so much as Be Careful What You Wish For. A queen wants a child. A princess wants marriage. A king wants his lusts fulfilled. And a child wants a companion, a monster finds a bride, and magic makes someone young and beautiful. How it all combines is the film's weakness, since the end leaves everyone, including this viewer, dissatisfied. But I wasn't sure if I wanted more or I wanted neat conclusions. I really think I wanted more.

The costumes and settings are amazingly lavish and are stars as much as the actors. Anyone waiting for more Game of Thrones can get some sex and violence and magic here. Again, it's not for everyone. But if you want dark fairy tales, this is a great way to scratch that itch.

Gorgeous visually but choppy and bare bones plot. Not for children.

This is a kind of strange movie about fairy tales which are Grimmer than Brothers Grimm and definitely won't be confused with cute and cuddly Disneyified fables that people are use to today. Italian director Matteo Garrone who is shooting in English with an international cast adapts tales by Giambattista Basile from 1634 AD which later inspired the Grimm Brothers in 1812. There are three tales that are dark,violent and have the message of be careful for what you wish for. If there is one flaw in the film is that it starts very slowly and feels a bit clunky at first but it does get better as it goes along drawing the viewer in. One of those odd films that for some reason has remained in my mind while some blockbusters are forgotten a day later.

Grimmer than GRIMMS; a whimsical amalgam of the gorgeous and grotesque.
These cautionary tales are about the prices one has to pay for what one desired.
Great production values, international cast and locations in Apulia among others.

Definitely *not* fairy tales to see with your kids. Too much violence, *way* too much (gratuitous and pointless) sex, little plot, no logic. No point or moral to the stories.

I only lasted 15 minutes. I did try but even that was a waste of time. Boring and dumb.

Birth is always stained by death. And death, in turn, is simply one element of birth
and not even the most dramatic one. ... You want a child? Every new life calls for a life to be lost. The equilibrium of the world must be maintained.
===
Who sings with such a beautiful voice? Where have you been hiding all this time?
... Don't hide! Stay out in the sunlight. Please, stay out to warm your cold king. Oh I see! So you want to play hard to get. Well, so be it. I have fought many wars in my time. And even the most impregnable fortress surrenders at last.
===
Before long you will be old enough to be married and then you will depart these walls forever.
-Well... If that is indeed the case, then find me a husband.
A husband? What sort of husband would you like?
-Well... I'd like my husband to be courageous and strong and... handsome.
I'm sure such a man exists, but until we find him, please, do not agitate yourself over a future none of us can predict. ...
