I was expecting a really good film because of all the awards and nominations. This is a long, boring, and unimaginative story about a regular guy who experiences a horrific tragedy, blames himself, loses everything, and becomes chronically depressed. Then another tragedy happens, he needs to step up and act responsibly but he just can't. All of the characters have limited vocabularies, seems like every sentence includes f***. That's it, that's the story. Sorry to ruin it for you.

A taciturn man stewing in psychic hell due to an inescapable past tragedy.
A mild, melancholy film with moments of painfully emotional and sometimes comic outbursts.
Perhaps overlong but well-edited pace.

A profoundly moving film. The emotions were so raw, I felt like I was there experiencing the tragedies alongside the characters. It is so heartbreaking to think and see that so many people walk around with such deep wells of grief that they can never really climb out of.
Also, superb acting by Affleck and Williams, especially in emphasizing the difference in how each gender copes with grief.

I usually watch all Academy Award nominated films, but I had avoided this one for a while because I knew the subject matter would make it not a very fun film. I'm very glad I finally watched it. It was definitely not a fun film, but it was magnificent. This was a poignant, painful, realistic look at grief and loss. Casey Affleck, as the haunted, guilt-ridden main character, was outstanding. This film was uncomfortable at times to watch, it almost felt like we were intruding right into the most terrible, personal moments of real lives, the moments that are usually kept private. I really wish we had seen more of Michelle Williams character. Not a film I would ever watch again, but I'm so glad I finally watched it. It was deeply sad and sometimes uncomfortable, but it was also a stunningly beautiful film.

Long, slow, boring movie. Depressing. Characters using F*#k every second sentence. Forced myself to watch an hour then couldn’t stand any more and turned it off.

An excellent movie: poignant and impacting. The theme of how hard it is to forgive onself after causing devestating tragedy and loss (yet the need to do it) comes out loud and clear. The acting is superb. Although profoundly sad, it is not depressing because it ends in hope. Hope brought about by the unexpected bonding and growing love between two people who desperately need each other. Bravo.

I have very little sympathy or empathy for a character that displays extremely poor life choices. There need to be a variety of good reasons to watch a film & this film offers very little justification for it's 135 minutes considering all the other things we can choose to do with leisure time.

After hearing my friends dis this movie as being too slow, having too much bad language, and having no conclusive ending, I put off watching this movie. But having an afternoon to waste, I put it in the DVD player and was mesmerized for 2 hours and 15 minutes.

First of all, the acting was superb. Michelle Williams had a small part that I don't think warranted the critics' overflowing praise but she was convincing. The child and teenage actors portraying the fatherless boy were spot on. The rest of the cast was superb but Casey Affleck's performance left me speechless. This role was meant for him, a quiet yet explosive actor.

And then the cinematography was beautiful. Anyone who has been in a Northeastern coastal town would attest to how true the imagery portrayed was.

Final thoughts: I think my friends (especially my women friends) missed the point of this movie. It was about how males deal with grief. Women expect and desire men to communicate their feelings openly. We, as men, do but we do it without saying much. It is what we don't say or how we say it in silences that my friends didn't get. If women want to know how men experience and deal with grief, they should watch this film and keep an open mind (and eye).

Watch this movie.

A powerful and profoundly moving psychological masterwork. A father's incautious behavior results in a devastating tragedy, after which his personality radically changes into such depressive behaviors as social isolation, deadened emotions, menial employment, and various other forms of self-punishment such as starting fights he will surely lose. Life events then occur that make demands of him which he is unable to meet because of the psychic damage he has incurred. Choked-back words and feelings struggle for expression but are too massively painful, or too hard to explain, to come out. Keep a hanky handy. And yet the film itself is not depressing, in fact at turns funny and charming in ways all should be able to relate to.

Numerous scenes of raw emotional power, as well as charm and high artistry, are likely candidates for re-watching. Ensemble performances by Casey Affleck (Academy Award Best Actor), Michelle Williams, and Lucas Hedges worthy for study in a master acting class.

It continues to amaze me when some individuals (commenters below) are simply incapable of appreciating what's before them, even though I know it should no longer surprise me.
