The Sand Warrior is the first book in the 5 Worlds graphic novel series intended for upper elementary readers and older. As a fantasy graphic novel, I can say that I really enjoyed reading The Sand Warrior for many reasons. First of all, the illustrations are beautiful, and the colors are very engaging and almost whimsical. While not everyone has the same taste in art, I feel that this graphic novel’s art style will appeal to a lot of young readers because it is soft and bright. Second of all, the worldbuilding is amazing and makes the story feel really grounded in a “real” world. The only issue is that sometimes the worldbuilding could be a little confusing in how it all relates; however, the main plot never gets muddy, and perhaps the rest of the worldbuilding will become clearer as we get further into the series. Finally, I enjoyed seeing the character development and the pace of how different things were revealed about our characters. They were nuanced enough to be unique from each other (which can sometimes be an issue when you have several characters). Their relationships start off rocky, for various reasons, but gradually get better as the story goes on. I enjoyed this graphic novel and can’t wait to get my hands on the second novel. I think children will enjoy this graphic novel series and could be a good resource for reluctant readers.

This is a good read-alike for the Amulet series. I love the characters and the imaginative world-building. A great adventure story.

I liked this book very much. I thought the illustrations were beautiful and I enjoyed the story. I loved the plant people and I want to learn more about the five worlds. I'm only sad that all the books aren't out now.

This graphic novel is kind of reminiscent of Avatar: The Last Airbender (the tv show, not the movie) and the Amulet series. If you like either of those, you need to give this graphic novel a shot! Imaginative worldbuilding, endearing characters, and gorgeous colors make this series a must read. It’s aimed at middle-grade readers, but it’s just as captivating for older readers as well.

Excellent complexity of character, plot, and setting, with plenty of adventure and excitement to boot. Nicely illustrated. Looking forward to more.
