Really disappointing book. I love books that redefine masculinity. But this book, almost in an underhanded way, does more harm than good. Both the dad and grandmother perpetuate stereotypes by telling their son ( who wants to sparkle and shine) that most boys don’t, but if he wants to ok. Dad even says it’s a good idea if he covers up his painted toe nails. My seven year old son, who loves pink and sparkly things, has never been laughed at, yet this book had older boys coming up to our main character, calling him dude and saying he will be laughed at. This had a negative affect on my son. It never occurred to him boys would laugh at him and it planted a seed of doubt in his mind. It also didn’t help the boy in the story is either very young, or just speaks in non sentence form, as if only young boys may like sparkly things. This type of book does not break down any boundaries or hold our sons up to a new stronger light. Disappointed.

Good book for siblings to discuss gender norms. Can boys sparkle? I hope so! And where are the books where girls can be seen throwing balls and driving toy cars and building cities?
