Thriller about a woman trapped in a zoo with her son and an unforeseen horror occurs. The novel is about survival and the primal instincts of a mother's love. Not enough for me here, just indiscriminate mayhem.

Wow. This was one stressful book. I made the mistake of reading it right before bed and had a really hard time falling asleep. A frightening, edge-of-your seat thrill ride that was also an examination of the beautiful relationship between a mother and her young son.

This title had so much potential and started out at a great pace, but toward the middle it begins to slump, and by the end it's just about to pick the pace back up when it abruptly ends. Overall, it's a decent read, but it will leave you with questions and disappointed by the ending.

This book was a huge disappointment! It was boring and seemed to drag on. There was minimal action or storyline. Not sure why, but I decided to torture myself with reading it through to the end. I wish I wouldn't have wasted my time. I guess I kept hoping it would get better, considering the fact that I had to wait a long time in the library queue to even get it.

To me, this novel was slow paced and boring.

Fast paced story on the unyielding drive of a mother and child faced with insurmountable odds. Phillips uses a unique setting to tell the age-old tale of familial survival in harrowing circumstances. Very fun and quick read!

This is a faced pace read and it did hold my attention. However, I do have to say I was expecting more danger and suspense from the animals as this was set in a zoo. The book ended up being more about the people then the animal kingdom itself. There definitely were some flaws in the plot that were very unbelievable, such as the knowledge or a 4 year old with such an advanced mind and vocabulary. I also found I did not like or relate to the protagonist or her choices and thought process. Over all it was a decent read, but fell flat at the end. My expectations were definitely not met.

This is a quick read; I read it in one sitting. The pacing is good, and the author does a good job of building and maintaining suspense. I appreciated that she incorporated the omnipresence of cell phones today - both positive and negative features.

The primary narrator is Joan, a mother who is trapped in a zoo with her young son. They had been about to leave, but ran into the tail end of a mass shooting. So, they had turned around to hide in the zoo to escape becoming the next victims.

After the first several chapters, you expect Joan to be the only narrator. So, it's quite disorienting when, about a quarter of the way into the book, there's suddenly a set of short chapters each narrated by a different person also trapped in the zoo. I really didn't think those chapters improved the book at all; I would have cut them.

There are also several chapters narrated by another character. Unlike the ones narrated by other victims, these chapters add a lot to the book; however, I didn't feel that they went far enough in accomplishing their presumed purpose.

All in all, this was a decent book but it felt a bit incomplete (and would have benefited from dropping all but the two main narrators).

I nearly stayed up all night the first night I started this book. I had to finally say, "no I have to stop now or I won't stop!" If you are a mom, you will "get" this mom's inner monologue about her son. It was nonstop action, hard to put down. I will say the end was a little off for me, but still good.

Intense, fast-paced read. 3.0 for the thrill factor, 3.5 for the the exploration of the mother's relationship with her son during this terrifying experience. I feel though, that it would have been more satisfying to have had closure with some of the secondary characters introduced in the book - or to not have introduced them at all.
