Jay-Z's 12 studio album is also one of his weakest. Some critic used the term "luxury rap" to describe his collab with Kanye, "Watch The Throne," and that applies doubly here. Jay is ridiculously successful and has nothing left to prove (or gain) by continuing to record and it's a pity he didn't stick with his promise to retire after the great "Black Album." Referencing two iconic pieces of British culture/history for some reason, "Magna Carta" features the best production (Timbaland, Pharrell, The Dream) and beats money can buy and high profile guest spots (Beyonce, Frank Ocean, Justin Timberlake), but comes off like the statues on the cover: exquisite, cold, lifeless. It's not an album for your party or your car stereo, but for looking out at the city from your $10,000 a night penthouse suite while you sip Cristal and mixed race models idly lie around on mink carpets. Nothing about this album breathes or makes an impact and all you'll take from it is that Jay is really rich, married to Beyonce, and has a kid named Blue Ivy. "Blueprint 3" was bloated too, but at least had a few solid singles, which is more than this can say.
