Americans are familiar with the removal of Cherokees in the infamous "Trail of Tears," but the involvement of African-American slaves is far less known. When the US Indian Removal Act forced Native Americans to relinquish their native land and move west, countless slaves followed them into the frontier, bound and shackled.

So let me get this straight. Native Indians circa 1800's held thousands of black slaves? In the 1920's the Grand Wizard of the KKK (Oklahoma) was a full blooded Cherokee? It's a great, and apparently, very long debate (3 centuries) about blood lines. Watch "Club Native" as a nice tie-in to this excellent documentary.

One might assume or at least hope that Native American tribes, which experienced genocide based upon ethnicity, would not be racists. Unfortunately this is not the fact. The Seminole and Cherokee tribes owned slaves. Under a treaty in 1866 these slaves were freed and given all the rights of tribal membership. Now these Freedmen are being denied the benefits of the tribe because they have African American Blood while Caucasians with minimal Native American heritage are granted full citizenship though they may have a lesser genetic claim. A trial is still active in federal court to right this wrong. It is distressing to see clear racism on the part of tribes who have been the victims of racism. Excellent, but disturbing documentary!!
