A sweet story of an African mother and her baby at an African market shows us community, market, food and transport cultures. Beautiful illustrations!.

My 2 pre-schoolers both enjoyed this book. Well written and illustrated, my children were intrigued to see how "shopping" was done in another culture. My 3-year-old really enjoyed the simple subtraction that was occurring in the story line, and my 2-year-old was really intrigued by the way the people at the market were engaging with "baby" at the market. Highly recommend. Wish Brantford Library had more books by this author.

While Mama shops at the market, Baby, riding on her back, is given treats to eat by vendors in decreasing numbers: bananas, oranges, biscuits, and coconut. He puts the extras in the basket on Mama's head and only when they are ready to leave (Mama thinks Baby must be hungry!) does she notice the extra food. The repetitive, cumulative text will keep listeners entertained and anticipating, and the vibrant, detailed mixed-media illustrations are eye-catching and fun! A winner for storytime and one-on-one sharing.
