I LOVED this film. Every character was well-crafted, well-acted, and compelling. I loved American Sign Language's integral role in the story and I loved the Cold War, period-piece feel. The film was at times frightening, funny, sexy, romantic, action-packed, you name it! And most of all, I went in looking for the fairy tale romance of a woman and a fish man, and I was not disappointed!

I truly enjoyed this movie on so many levels! The cinematography was exceptional. The acting daring and innovated - a mute actress and "creature" as the main characters !!
The movie was unique in that there was a just story - with no graphic, frantic fight & chase scenes with specific effects. A rarity in today's movie offerings.
And it has a twist in the end!
A lovely escape from life as we know it.

I watched this film and can't believe it won the Academy Award for Best Picture. I have rated it 2 1/2 stars. They should just have re-made The Creature From The Black Lagoon.
Sally Hawkins was as good as she was in Maude. Olivia Spencer plays her role perfectly, not too serious but not so lightly that she is comic relief. Michael Shannon as the villain is his usual quirky nuts bad guy.
It is watchable if you don't expect a great film. Several scenes in the film made me think "This is stupid! Why have they even included this!
It is somewhat distracting knowing the film was shot around Toronto and identifying the various locations. The production quality is excellent; too bad it is wasted on a silly story.

As for the movie itself, it was entertaining, the cinematography was good, as Best Picture of the Year... questionable.

Great movie. I love it.

Did not like this movie at all. "Darkest Hour" should have won Best Picture.

Both my husband and I did not like this movie. We couldn't understand how this movie could have won the best movie oscar, especially against other great films like Darkest Hour???

This film won the Academy Award/Oscar for best picture in 2018? I’m in the underwhelmed contingent. Maybe watching the film on my computer detracted from the visual impact, but for me the issue was the storyline—in no way interesting or compelling. The characters were all isolated, lonely individuals living in a cold war setting (1962) and all suffered from cold war anxiety/paranoia—whether physical, mental or emotionally. None of them could live up to the Hollywood musical or the Cadillac-owning credibility. All of the elements were there for a good story; the speech impaired woman, the job challenged neighbor, the Soviet underground, the maniacal boss, and the mysterious creature but none of it connected in an interesting way for me. Half way through the movie, I’m wondering is this about over . . .? Underneath the imagery is a story of embracing diversity, individuality, the uniqueness all of all creatures/beings. Overall, probably worth watching for you to gauge your own impressions/reactions to the film.
