Based on the true story of the author's ancestors, Up from Freedom gives authenticity to the racial strife just before the American Civil War. Blacks were considered by many to be not human, another species entirely. That belief entitled whites to treat blacks like animals, selling slave babies, like pups for profit. It's inconceivable to me. An important novel by a Canadian author that shines light on hatred in a manner similar to To Kill a Mockingbird.
