I am on the fence about this one.

It appears to be a labor of love; Jeff Bridges (at his best, better than True Grit), Dakota Johnson and John Hamm anchor a great cast, but there's a plot so convoluted (and violent) that I have to suggest required reading of 20th century American History.

Herbert Hoover. The ConIntelPro Papers, by Ward Churchill and Jim Vanderwall. Or Google ConIntelPro.

Richard Nixon. The Price of Power, by Seymour Hersh, the greatest American journalist you've never heard of.

John F. Kennedy. The Dark Side of Camelot, also by Seymour Hersh.

Charles Manson. Helter Skelter, by Vincent Bugliosi, the man who put him away for his psychotic crimes.

If you know your stuff, this is a thrill ride and a pleasure. The director's style is kaleidoscopic and all over the place, though, for a typical viewer. The Coen Brothers and Tarantino in a blender. I like Death Proof better, I like all Coens better, but "Old Royale" has to be given credit for a fine ensemble, some indelible images, and an uncomfortable mix of hilarity and dread.

Love your local library/bookstore and get informed!

Overall feel: Meh. Billed as a thriller, it is pretty boring. There was a little bit of intrigue/curiosity in the film, but we never had a reason to be interested in any of the characters. On top of it, Drew Goddard was so enamored with his setting, style and characters, he lingered far too long on almost every shot. I had a similar experience with The Revenant. If Drew Goddard (director and writer) would have understood he was making a thriller and edited the film for a thriller's pacing, this film would have come in about 90 or 100 minutes (official run-time is 144 minutes) and might have been a really good film. It still would have suffered from Drew Goddard's script (which made most of the characters pretty flat and not characters you would be drawn to), but at least it would not have been so slow (you're allowed to get bored pretty frequently). Music is great. Cynthia Erivo is true a musical talent. Casting for each role was pretty top notch. Acting was overall really great. It is a shame Drew Goddard was blind to the pacing in his direction and flat characters in his script - because everything else about this film was spectacular. The end result is a C- at best.

I was honestly disappointed in this. It felt like there was so much potential and then so many things ended up feeling unfinished/unexplained. I get that there was supposed to be a small element of mystery but at the same time, it felt like there was too much mystery. There were several things that I figured out and kind of extrapolated about reasons and motives but they could have used some more fleshing out within the movie

Glad that I got to see it but also glad that I didn't spend money on it

Great thriller and film noir. It feels a lot like a great Coen Brothers movie but it's not one of theirs. Great script and direction. Fantastic cast. Quirky, weird, creepy, and outstanding. My only complaint was that it was a bit long. I think it could be trimmed by 15 minutes or so to keep it at (or just under) two hours. Break out the popcorn or chips and turn the lights off. This movie is best watched in the dark.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I borrowed this, but I didn't love it. The acting was ok, but I didn't like the plot and found it a bit confusing.

Weird in a quirky good way I especially liked Jeff Bridges, Jon Hamm and Cynthia Erivo.
Who is on the recovered film?

Quite different! Saw this by accident on a long plane flight. Felt to me a bit like the movie Pulp Fiction.

I definitely recommend this movie, but not for families. I find Tarantino movies to violent, so other's comparisons to those seem a bit far off for me.
